Sure it's well behind the tech curve, but for the novice whom may just want to
use it for backing up or the occasional Movie burn it sure sounds good.

You got that right! The price is $27.99 plus a big gamble on a $50.00 rebate. 16x DL burners with no rebates start @ $39.99 shipped from newegg, maybe less from other places.

Its a great deal but I'm scared away with the $50 rebate as well. Maybe if it were a name brand offering the rebate I'd bite.

Damn. I paid $27.00 AMIR from the last deal. Others have received their rebates already.

The drive is licensed by Pioneer to Arstor Technologies, an Arima Group company.

Yamakawa has no firmware updates for this drive, and Pioneer firmware updates won't work. But you can use the ones provided by Arstor (Model DRP160HD). I have this drive and upgraded the firmware using the Arstor version 1.21 (which is the same version currently available for Pioneer's 8x DVD writers).
