8x vs 4x AGP

JBT

Lifer
I have always heard that the differences between 8x and 4x AGP is slim to none. Anyways I went to a local copmuter store to look for something. I get in a conversation with the store owner and he tells me that 8x AGP is TWICE as fast as 4x he tells me how when he plays medal of honor 2 he get 180 fps with his new 8x as compared with his old 4x motherboard of about 90fps. I figured it was probably other things in which this speed came from his settings, AAAF, resolution, or driver problems something like that. Would my thinking be correct or is he right?

You are quite right - his speed improvements (if you believe them) stem from other factors and NOT the 8X AGP (the chipset is the obvious choice, especially if he has gone for a Nforce2 board). For that matter, maybe he changed his processor and memory too ... who knows!

If you want to convince him that 8X AGP is irrelevant, tell him to temporarily disable it in his BIOS, and then run his games. I don't see any difference between 8X and 4X on my Asus A7V8X on any benchmark or game I've ever run (and yes, I have measured them before and after 🙂.

I would have sugested that. BUt I was getting pretty mad at him so I left. He says that I my radeon 9500 pro will die after 6 months if I overclock it.... He says that all PC components die at about 6 months when you overclock them and that you shouldn't do it. I I have had my CPU and VIDEO cards overclocked ever since I had my own computer and nothing has died on me.... oh well sucks to be him missing out on some free performance.

4x vs 8x is simply a matter of bandwidth availability. Its like tossing a hotdog down a hallway, only with 8x the hallway is twice as big. Doesn't matter to the hotdog though, does it!

I ran my Celly 266 at 400 for years. Still running in a friend's PC right now! Dude's obviously a loser. After a lame comment like that, if he tells you the sky is blue, you better get a color meter!

OF COURSE its twice as fast!!

8x has 4 more x's than 4x, DUH!! its like XXXXXXXX vs. XXXX

:disgust:

just wait till 16x AGP comes out and then we'll be blazing!

LOL

Ask him about the merits of using a dual processor system, and whether or not it'd be twice as fast! I do so enjoy having fun with those kinds of people. 😀
