8x dvd media won't burn at 4x with optorite...

I currently have an optowrite DD203 burner which is a 4x media burner. I tried using memorex 8x dvd-r media but it only burns at 1x or 2x. I've put it into dvd identifier, it says that the media is 8x [1x 2x 4x 6x+] capable, but in the device section, it says that it will only do 2x. I used princo media (a cheaper media) and it burns perfectly with 4x speed. what is wrong? how can i fix this?
 
upgraded to the latest firmware? I have the same burner and have been burning an 8x spindle of Riteks at 4x with no issues. That's the only brand I use though so I can't speak for the brands you are using.
