Someone has asked me to install a CD-RW in their Pentium 166MHz/32MB RAM system. I have an 8x Iomega I could use but let's face it: burners weren't even on the horizon when a system like that was in vogue. So my question is, will it work? Is that enough computer to support a burner?

i used a 2x burner in my 166 system for several years (i was ahead of the times)

i see no reason why it wouldn't work

my only suggestion is to make sure you reboot before burning (to make sure resources are free)...turn off all screen savers....and don't run ANY programs other than the burning software

other than that, should work just fine!

32MB RAM. Ouch! That's gonna hurt. I doubt they'll be able to get 8X with that RAM and CPU. I've burned at 6X on my old 166MHz with 128MB of RAM successfully.

1) For starters, I'd suggest increasing the RAM to at least 64MB, 128MB even better.

2) Secondly, use software like Nero. While it's not true burn-proof like today's burners, it's got got cacheing tweaks.

3) Tell your friend NOT to have any other program open, other than the burning software (ie Nero) open, and NOT to use the computer while it's burning. Surfing with the burner in the background is a big no no for this rig.

4) If your friend runs into trouble, have them back the buring speed off to 6X, 4X, or even 2X if needed. However, I'm sure 6X will work based on my personal experience.

As old as this rig is, you can't blame them for wanting a burner. They can always pull the drive and put it in a new rig if the 166MHz is ever upgraded, right?

Good luck!

i installed an hp 9510i (12x) in my pop's dell that's 166mhz and 40mb, and nothing out of the ordinary (it burns like any burner w/o burnproof)
good luck!

Thanks for the fast responses. I'll tell them they've got a green light.
