8X AGP

Hi Guys,

How do i know for sure if the vidoe card (ATI 9700 PRO) is running at 8X AGP. My motherboard (Asus P4S8X) supports 8X AGP. When looking under Advacnced Display properties in XP, it says that AGP is at 4X. In the BIOS, 8X is enabled. All the latest drivers installed for 9700 (Catalyst 4.1). I would really appriciate any pointers that you guys might have. Thanks so much.

SmartGART tab in Display Properties > Settings > Advanced. If SmartGART automatically determines that 4x AGP is the fastest the card is comfortable with, then just leave it at that. The difference between 4x and 8x AGP is minimal to nonexistent at the moment.

FYI, the first few 9700 Pros had trouble running at 8x AGP, but I believe that was fixed in subsequent cards. And some motherboards just aren't stable at AGP 8x. I wouldn't worry about your current settings, as long as everything is working fine.

Thanks for a great response. In terms of performance, yes, the games that i have played lately (Max Payne 2 and Call of Duty) have worked flawlessly even at high resolution. I guess it is all good. Thanks for the response.
