I do not have a ATI 9700 8x card (i despise ATI), but has anyone run the 8x card on a 4x machine and compare the performance? I ask this because I am wondering whether I should upgrade my mobo to an 8x board when I get the nv30. I assume that the performance difference should be minimal, but I would like to get some feedback on this.

Upgrade, Upgrades, Upgrades. Next time I build a computer, I swear it will stay top-of-the-line for more than 5 seconds.

Thanks for the input.

Not if you won't use an ATI card ;)

From what I understand AGP 8X is just a marketing tool as of now, with no real purpose. Im sure it will be useful someday, so if you plan on using the same mobo for a long time, it would be a good thing to invest in.

AGP 8X was brought ahead of time to prevent the spec from being a bottleneck whenever games or whatnot starts using up the bandwidth of AGP 4X... whenever that is.

My guess is even the fastest current CPUs will become a bottleneck before AGP 4X does.
But who knows.

It's definitely not worth it. AGP 4x still isn't really a bottleneck, although there probably is some sort of performance difference between AGP 4x and 2x in certain applications.

No difference right now. Just look at the reviews for nvidia's 8x supported gf4's. It's like when 4x agp came out. You couldn't tell the difference between it and 2x agp. It was sometimes unstable like agp 8x is or was with some setups now.

It is all hype. That is what pretty much everything is. I remember this time last year serial ata was spose to be quite the deal, but when push came to shove, it didn't turn out as they hoped....
