Aha, the article makes it sound like a battle:
"Aliya was tripped up in the 18th round by 'trouvaille' "
Samir fell to "Roscian"

You almost expect something like "Speller #49 is down, repeat, speller is down!!!!"

/can't spell "appoggiatura" and doesn't know what it means

I think the same thing about most rap/rock songs nowaways. You're not on the front lines in any real sense if the word, you're idiots putting yourselves in bad situations.

You will find that most of these kids push themselves, parents have little to do with it. And what would be wrong if a parent pushed their child to succeed? geesh a parent can't win on anything anymore, can we?

I think it's both. Anybody who does not think that there is no suspense or pressure in a Spelling Bee should watch Spellbound. That's a great documentary.

Oh, I also remember that Indian guy who got 2nd last year fainting when he got up to spell a word. He promptly got up and spelled it correctly. Talk about uplifting.
