8RDA+ wont detect WD after PSU fails, HELP

My el-cheapo Raidmax power supply went out last night on my case. So, I went and got a new one today, a 430W Antec True Power.

I install it, start it up, and the comptuer just stalls at "detecting IDE drives". I've read all the other threads about this issue, but this is just crazy. THE DRIVES USED TO WORK. I tried every combination of master/slave/cable select I could think of with no luck. I have tried clearing the CMOS as well. I even snipped the wire going to pin one on the IDE cable. I have an 80GB Caviar as the primary system disk, and a 100GB as a secondary disk. The motherboard will not detect either one of these WD drives.

Right now I'm running off a 40GB Maxtor, which the board detects just fine.

I very much need those other two drives. What happened here? Can anyone give me some tips or fixes? Did the PSU kill the drives on its way out?

Any information is very much appreciated.

I know it's obvious, but this is often the problem: make sure the HD is jumpered properly as a master/slave. Improper jumper settings often cause hangs at boot screens. Even if it *was* fine before, just double check to make sure it's jumpered fine.

That's a very possible situation, unfortunately. One of the many reasons to shell out the bucks on a name-brand PSU.

Are you using a 80-pin cable? I've seen several mobos where newer drives don't work with the older 40-pin, and the opposite, where older drives don't work with the newer 80-pin cables.

Yes, I have tried every master/slave/cable select combination I can thing of. All with the same result, hanging at POST.

Right now I have an Antec 430W True power in there. This one really ought to last me for the long haul, but it wont bring back my old drives. :\

Yes, I am using 80 pin cables. I've never had any trouble with them before, even on this board. The maxtor that is currently running XP on my system is on an 80 pin cable.

With the jumper removed, its in "Master" mode. I have tried this with both hard drives (with no other device on the cable) with no luck.

The thing is, the drives were working just fine, then after I changed the PSU, they didnt work at all. I didnt change ANY IDE settings during the PSU switch.

When you clipped pin 1 did you clip the ground next to it? If not do so, if that doesn't work and MARMADUKE's fix doesn't work I'd say the firmware probably got fried when the PSU bit it.

Try setting the drive as a slave and install it in a friends computer. Set the IDE devices to Auto in BIOS. Does it recognize the drive? If not, might be zapped.

I just had a problem with a 20 gig maxtor drive. The system would not see the drive when connected to the 1st (grey) connector on the 80-pin cable. I had to connect it to the last (black) connector before the system "saw" the drive.
