8RDA+ or MSI KT3 Ultra2

I was about to buy the MSI KT3 Ultra2. Should I spend the extra 30.00 and get the 8RDA+?

My setup will be with a XP 2100

Also while Im asking.. I know if I get the MSI KT3 Iltra2 then I should buy DDR 2700.. What should I get with the 8RDA+. That is if I buy it.

Get the EPox - and go with a lessor processor. The EP8RDA+ will get more performance out of an XP1700+ than the MSI can get fron the XP2100+.
Just move your spending cash around accordingly.

Stay away from VIA boards. Get the 8RDA+. Get two 256MB Corsair DDR400 memory modules just in case you want to upgrade to a 400MHz DDR FSB Barton processor in the future. In which case, you could operate your FSB synchroeous with your memory - 400MHz/400Hz. Decreasing latency in the process. And remember to use two memory modules in order to take advantage of the dual memory controllers - increases memory bandwidth. One memory module in each of the outside memory slots. Like this:

******************Empty*******************[Slot 2]
******************Memory Module************[Slot 3]

I was planning on getting one 512, but I could tweak my budget a bit and just buy one 256 DDR400 right now and get another in a month or so I suppose... The prices may be down a bit to.. in which I could save a little more.

I think you should get on 512 for now and buy anotehr 512 later


512 ram wont be enough in a year or so

(right now, windows xp only runs happily with 512ram)

Better yet, one 256MB now, one 256MB in a month then one 256MB in a year or so (if it's needed).

Thanks, I just ordered the 8RDA+. Now I just have to decide on the memory.

Due to watching money right now I would like to stick with 1 stick of 256.. just for about 2 months.. I can deal with the lag with XP for that long... but I wonder..

What if I put in 256 now and in 2 months buy 2 sticks of 512... and put them like this..

******************512************[Slot 1]
******************256************[Slot 2]
******************512************[Slot 3]

Would it still take advantage of the duel memory modules since the exact RAM is in slots 1 & 3?.. Just kinda thinking ahead.

I did read that the modules need to be the same... but I wondered if that configuration would work.

For the sake of the future, 768MB will be just golden. No need to go higher. And you will get the fastest performance when all memory slots are populated:

***256MB***
***256MB***
***256MB***

So, one 256MB module now. And then two more 256MB modules when you get the money.

You could also set up the modules in slots 2 and 3 to benefit from the dual memory controllers. But, "the outside memory slots" is easier to explain. You won't have to worry about this as you will be lucky enough to have all memory slots filled.
