8RDA+ and Crucial PC2700 not compatible?

I was ready to pull the trigger on this today and happened to see a post saying Crucial PC2700 won't run at 166fsb on this board. Is this true? anyone having any luck here?

I planned to run my XP2100+ and Crucial PC2700 at 180fsb synch on this Epox board. Now it seems I may have to pick different ram and I can't afford Corsair.

Any suggestions on this ram or different ram for the same price that will OC well?

I hope not to, I decided that is the board I want and I already have 2 512MB sticks of PC2700 Micron (Crucial). I haven't bought the board, so if it doesn't work, I would like to know.

I should know by Wednesday night or Thursday night...assuming everything I've ordered arrives on time.

I have 1.5Gb of Crucial PC2700 in my 8RDA+. Now, someone send me a 333MHz-based CPU and I'll test it for a few years at 166Mhz :D

I think that it maybe only 512 sticks of PC 2700RAM but its hard to tell from that thread. I wanted 2 512s but i guess 2 256's will work.

Also I went to the crucial websit and for the 8RDA+ board PC2700 512MB sticks are not listed as a supported memory, but PC2700 256MB are.

That linked compatibility thread sounds like a bunch of BS. They list the ASUS A7N8X and the 8RDA+ as two of the several boards they have on their nForce2 "compatibility" list. Those two (I'm sure others like the NF7-S are on their list also) comprise the majority or at least a large chunk of nForce2 boards, and many people are running this combination just fine.

Just a note for the memory - I hear that Crucial PC2700 doesn't overclock so well. 180 FSB should be attainable at 3-3-3-6 or so, but I don't know how often you can get that memory to 180 FSB at 2-2-2-5, which does make a difference. I have some Samsung PC2700 (not the amazing rev C stuff or whatever) that does 180+ MHz DDR at 3-3-3-7, but not even 166 MHz (at 2.5-2.8 V) at 2-2-2-5.

Twinmos/winbond from memoryx.net @$73/256mb. I am running 200fsb x11.5 mem @ 10% 5-2-2-2 super stable on an 8rda+. Only mod is as3 on the stock NB cooler.

Kingston hyperx is also supposed to run very well on the nforce mobos as well.

I can def. say I reco the twinmos/winbond. I am VERY happy with it!

I've been running Crucial PC2700 with an Athlon XP1700+ on an FIC AU11, which is the same board as the Epox 8RDA+. It's been rock stable at 12x174FSB synch with the memory timings at 2.5-3-3-5. I'm doing it with 2 256MB sticks, which are on Crucials list of acceptable chips for all the Nforce2 MBs I checked. The issue *seems* to be only with the 512MB modules. If you want to use 512MB sticks you might be better off going with a different brand. These days there's so much good memory as such low prices that it won't be too big a deal going from Crucial to Samsung, Mushkin or something similar.

Hold the phone...!

I just got in 2-256meg sticks of the $59 twinmos...twinmos (their labled brand) and its running 215fsb 2-2-2-6 no problem and yes its on an 8RDA+ (XP1700+ "B" @10X215fsb) 2150mhz 1.750volts...

I tried it at a higher fsb but it started rebooting @235fsb so I`m happy with 215fsb... BTW Sandra memory scores are 3543/2987 (gotta love AMD it kicked my P4`s score by 300-400 points... :) )

Apparently it's only the 512mb stick for whatever reason... anyone got any suggestions for a comparable replacement?

I ordered 2, 256MB sticks of PC 2700 from www.crucial.com about 1 week ago.

I have had stability nightmares getting this stuff to work at 166Fsb... I can get it into Windows, but prime95 fails regardless of the voltage (2.6-2.8)... DAOC my my main game either dumps me back to desktop after a few minutes or reboots my machine.

I am using the Asus A7N8X with a 2500XP+ Barton...

The CPU is running at stock speed, temp is 40C. and I have also played with the voltages to try and increase stability (to rule out the memory) with no luck... If I drop the ram down to 83% of FSB, which clocks it at 133Mhz the system runs pretty good. I have reason to beleive my Crucial Memory modules are defective at a rated speed on this board.

Any thoughts would be great... :-/

Hmmm, strange that you asked about the 512MB sticks and they responded by guaranteeing the 256MB sticks. That sounds like an admission of the problem to me and an evasive answer to a legitimate question. I'd expect better than that from Crucial. On the bright side, with their service record there should not be any problem sending back memory that doesn't work. If it's rated at 166FSB and won't run there, just RMA it and buy something that works. This sorts of shakes my faith in Crucial though, I'd always viewed them as a company that could do no wrong.

why lose the faith? Their site says 256 PC2700 only. The 512 is having problems and isn't listed as a supported product for the nForce2 boards.

Because everyone else makes 512MB PC2700 that DOES run 166FSB on an Nforce2, so I've lost faith in that Crucial RAM is not working as advertised. I also lose faith in that a buyer should expect PC2700 to run 166 without drilling 8 levels deep into some compatability chart. A buyer should expect that if the 256MB chips work then the 512MB chips will work too. The last time I bought a hard drive I didn't read 100 pages of technical info to be sure that it's going to work on my exact MB/CPU combo, I just assumed that it would work as advertised. It's not unreasonable to expect the same from RAM. With desktop memory, PC2700 = PC2700 = PC2700. Any system that accepts and runs on one should accept and run on all regardless of brand or size.

Not to mention it was on the compatability chart as being supported mere days ago.

GagHalfrunt: That bothered me as well...ignoring my question and giving me a "stock" reply...I just went ahead and called FedEx and sent the order back before receiving it.

lumen: Exactly! It WAS listed by their Memory Selector just a week or so ago...and removed now without any explanation.

I would be super-interested in hearing the results if you decide to take delivery and try them.
