8mm Video Cassette to Computer/DVD

So I just bought a capture card to record my TV shows (A hauppauge HVR-1800) and I thought why not transfer all my 8mm home movies to the computer/DVD. So I dug out my old camcorder (A rather low tech device A canon ES-190 from March of 1999). I can play the tape but every couple of seconds the picture blurs from side to side, Making it unsuitable for transferring my videos. is the camera a total loss or do the heads just need to be cleaned? and how would I do that? as the 8mm cleaning cassettes are really expensive and hard to find (If I could find one at all)

Here is a short Video of what I mean (Youtube really makes it worse than really is though
