WD JB series run hot from what I read. Both IBM and Maxtor run cool. But, which one is better overall, IBM or Maxtor?

Man, you're going to get opinions here. The IBM's will be faster, but I think it's a matter of preference. Maxtor has waaay better RMA support, but I've had to RMA 4 drives to them, where I never had to deal with IBM on this matter. I have a Deskstar right now, I love it. It's quite and runs fairly cool. But the newer Maxtors are good, much better then their old ones. You couldn't go wrong with either bro.

I personally I would go with the Maxtor. I have had zero problems with them. The IBMs have always been great performers, but have had reliability problems in the past. I had my 30GB Deskstar die and there is a class action lawsuit against IBM for some of their drives. I would like to think that IBM has solved these problems since then, but until I am sure, I will stick with WD or Maxtor. By the way, I would go for the 8MB cache if it is available on your drive. If reliability wasn't an issue I would go with the IBMs.

I just replaced two Maxtor 80 GB drives with two IBM 180GXP 80 GB drives. The performance difference was way in favor of the IBM/Hitachis. These puppies (180GXP) are not like the old "Deathstars." If you buy from NewEgg - RMA is never a problem - it is a no questions asked replacement policy.
