8kha and intermitten usb mouse hang

I just got an 8kha, running win2k pro. Installed the 4in1 driver, installed usb filter driver, and plugged in my usb mouse. Works fine for a bit, and then the mouse freezes. Any ideas?

Is that the Win 2k USB patch or the VIA USB filter driver?

I've tried both the win2k usb patch and via filter drivers. I assume by win2k usb patch you just mean service pack 2?

After using it for a while, the mouse freezes, and win2k tells me to unplug it.

If you have a PS/2 adapter for the mouse -- I suggest you use it.

Eureka! It works! (maybe)

After having installed the 4in1 drivers, the via filter drivers, checking to make sure I had the latest bios (07-05-01), and service pack 2 for win2k, I went into bios and enabled "pnp os". That didn't work. Then, I DISABLED "assign irq to usb". Shouldn't work, but it did. My usb mouse has been working perfect for the past 90 minutes, longer than it has worked before w/o freezing. I'm hoping this isn't just a coincidence!

Since the epox 8kha is being widely recommended, I figure someone else is bound to run into the same problem. Btw, can anyone explain why this worked?

Argh. I didn't solve the problem, only alleviate it. Ok, it's not a mobo problem, it's that most of my devices are trying to use irq 11.

You aren't overclocking the FSB are you. The kt266 chipset is having issues with FSB over 138 or so and USB devices. If you are running below that you shouldn't have problems.

I had a similar problem with a Logitech optical mouseman. When using USB port, it would typically lock up in 5-15 minutes. I could move to another of the sets of ports and the same thing would happen until I ran out of pairs of ports. I finally just went to the PS2 port with the adapter. Anyway, a few weeks later I flashed a new BIOS to my MSI K7T Pro (Via DDR chipset) board and I think that solved the problem. I moved the mouse back to USB and it has worked solidly ever since. I also recently upgraded(?) to WinXP RC2 from Win2K and have had no problems with the USB mouse on it either. I am unsure exactly but believe it was the BIOS upgrade that solved the problem. Finally, Logitech released a relatively new driver a couple of weeks ago it you are using a Logitech mouse.

rkoenn, actually, I believe now that it's win2k's fault. I uninstalled service pack 2 for win2k, and my mouse has been ok for the past 7 hours.

wow, I've spent 2 days trying to get my usb mouse to work. Please let it continue to work!

Go to msihardware.com and get the 1.4 tweaked bios. It will allow you to play with the IRQs a bit in the bios. There are no other changes to the bios, otherwise.
