I was previously running a Chaintech VNF3-250 mobo with an Athlon64 3200+ (C0 stepping with 1meg cache) with an enermax 435 watt whisper PSU and 9700AIW. I just bought a new Epox 8KDA3J and Antec 430 watt Truepower PSU to replace the subpar chaintech and loud PSU, but now i'm having trouble booting. Without plugging any drives in, just main components, the fans spin for about 1 second and shut off (with antec PSU). The video card seems to work fine in my nforce2 mobo, the cpu was working fine this morning and after switching it back still works in the chaintech. The Epox system will boot with a geforce3. So what's the deal? It doesn't seem like any component is actually broken per se - are they just not getting enough power? The funny thing is, my friend is running a system with almost the exact same components (same mobo, cpu, psu, 9700pro) and has no problems. All thoughts would be appreaciated.

more then enough power. First suggestion would be, did you remember to plug the extra power cable in for the graphics card? And if so, do you have anything else running on that (ie a couple of hard drives?), if you have an extra power cable try switching the one to the graphics card and see what happens.

You're not forgetting your auxiliary power for the motherboard or video card, by any chance? Also really ream the video card FIRMLY into the AGP slot, in case it's just stiff due to being new (I had one that I would've sworn was fully seated, but... yeah ). If you have any front-USB wiring plugged into the motherboard's USB headers, unplug it, and if the problem persists, try the board outside the case on cardboard to isolate it from any case-related problems.

Good luck DanteE :)
