RE: Epox 8K7A+

What's the difference between revision 1.1 and the 1.0

Can a 1.0 be upgraded ?

Thanks

There is always the chance of the Rev. 1.0 board having the QA6 transistor still there. QA6 is over the top of the AGP slot. EPoX removed the transistor on some of the later Rev. 1.0 boards. If you do not have it, don't worry about it. From AMD World 8K7A Issues:

<< One of the first issues to crop up was when the printer was plugged in and system refused to switch on .Now a 300w power supply was in use and thoughts remotely reminded me somewhere the demand on DDR specified boards was greater from the power supply. Was this cause or was there a work around, well EPOX responded to the problem and identified a 3-pole transistor labeled on motherboard as QA6 and removal of this would allow and fix the printer problem. Two ways of removal surfaced either by de-soldering the 3 points or simply using a small pair of wire cutters and gently clip the component in half. The QA6 is positioned right of the AGP slot and clearly you will see a 3-pole component. >>

my 8k7a has the QA6 resistor, and I have no problems with my printer. Who knows what exactly the problem is, epox certainly doesnt seen to have any clue

Many have reported problems with the QA6, and have had success by removing or cutting it. I would rather not have it if EPoX elected to remove it.

OK... this leads me to my next question. Is Epox doing anything as far as an RMA or Repair? (not that I want to be without my board..) But I may be able to return the one I have and buy new one.

As far as I have heard, EPoX will issue an RMA# and remove the QA6. At first they advised just to cut it, then changed over to RMA it to them for the removal, or it will void the warranty.

Sonny -

My first 8K7A has the QA6 in place and it hits 195mhz FSB..so I don't think that will affect the FSB overclockability. I am not using a printer connected to the local port however..it uses the USB port. Second, my Rev 1.1 board also has the QA6 piece on there..yours does not?

No, the first thing that I checked was if QA6 was there. It is not on the board I just received. I have also read posts where the 5V was increased by cutting/removing the QA6. It is not on my later Rev. 1.0 board either.

EDIT: I am hoping more for a better Northbridge than anything with this board. I am surprised that the QA6 is on your board. It was supposed to have been removed.

Yeah, right above the AGP slot. It says QA6 and has a small block soldered on via three solder points. It is right next to a small chip. We probably got the boards from the same shipment since we both ordered from Newegg on the same day, and mine does say Rev 1.1 on it. Very, very strange. I have not had any +5v problems with my Rev 1.0 though, so I am not too concerned, plus I won't even be using a printer on this board..oh well. Just out of curiosity, what is the number below the barcode your board...to the right of the northbridge? Mine is 17001301963...

The # on mine is: 17001301931. I just checked again with a magnifier, and it is not there.

DAMN.. DUH.. I was looking all around to the right top of the AGP slot where I thought QA6 should be. It is to the left, and present on both boards. I am going to check the +5V after installation. I probably will cut it if it is low like the others I tried.

I just hope that the Northbridge is better on this one. There seems to be many others that cannot get much over 150 on this board, and a few that reach much higher. I have a couple of GeForces around I could try, but like my Radeon. I will also try without the Acoustic Edge. I have already been through 8 different sticks of Crucial in all possible combinations on the other boards.

Yeah, ours are very similar in numbers..mines newer by 30 boards or so..;) My NB was a week 17..I just put some AS on the NB and reused the NB HSF with better pins. Those pins Epox use are very hard to get out..but they suck after you remove them once. I am assembling now and I just disassembled my Dragon and I am packing it up. I'll let you know how I do on the FSB. I will be using my Radeon and AE so I don't expect too high..150-155 will be fine with me. I just ordered a 1.4ghz from Newegg for only $115 and I will probably switch out my 1.2ghz with that when it comes in..:)
