Third post, will make it short. I can't get any os to install on the system. The install tells me the files are not valid when copying them over from CD. Anyone close to this setup? Anyone got any idea what the problem can be? The RDRAM LED is amber (on mb)...should it be green or something?

4 x 128MB Kingston PC-1066 A01 Memory
Intel Retail P4 2.26 CPU
Retail Gigabyte 8IHXP Motherboard...using onboard Sound and NIC.
Maxtor ATA133 80GB Hard Drive
ALL NEW!

Did you try installing with just one 128MB stick, CPU, Mobo and HD? Leave everything out, especially all but one RAM stick. Then add it one at a time.

Try a different CDrom! What CDrom are you using? Check on correct cabling of CRrom.

This sounds like a hardware problem. Setting up with minimum hardware is good advice, for trouble shooting, but does require memory minimum of 2X128 modules rdram (slots 1&2) & 2Xcrimms (slots 3&4).

Currently, using GA-8IHXP. It's great. I found 2X256 Kingston 1066 rdram works best. (Filling all 4 mem slots with rdram modules, for some reason, doesn't work as well.)

I tried two different CD-ROMS, 2 RIMMS vs 4 RIMMS, different hard drive, different OS, almost everything. I'm going to a friends tonight to test the RDRAM in an Intel 850 motherboard. It's been road steady for him for sometime now. Already started an RMA process with newegg.com. How is there return/exchange policy?

If the memory checks out then it's got to be the board...RIGHT? Everything else has been tested in another computer.

What! You mean I can't use all four RIMM slots and what does "Doesn't work well" mean? Do you think that might be the problem?

Bellyofthebeast - Can you look at your motherboard and tell me if the light (RDRAM LED) is amber or what color? I don't remember if it was a different color before I added the memory.

Thanks...Keep the ideas coming!

Couple of ideas:

  • Make sure Boot Sector Virus Protection is disabled in the BIOS
  • Make sure your CD drive is plugged into one of the standard IDE controllers and not the RAID controller... ditto for your HDD
  • Make sure your operating system CD is clean and not scratched up (duh)
  • Did you remember to plug in the auxiliary power plug, and is your power supply a decent one? edit: actually, looks like it has TWO aux. power plugs you can use, might as well plug 'em both in...

Sorry if those aren't super-insightful suggestions, but maybe the shotgun approach will help... Good luck!

Yes. I did it all.

I tried all four IDE Channels and all with the same results.

Last night I installed all four sticks of ram in my friends (Thank Sen!) older P4 system running a 400FSB. I even mixed them with his PC800. Everything worked fine. I can only assume it's a DOA Board. Newegg.com approved my RMA today so I'm shipping it out tomorrow. I'll let you know how it works out!

Belly...did you get a chance to check the LED?

Thanks all!

Got the motherboard replacement on Friday, installed on Saturday and was gaming within an hour or so. It was the motherboard.

One outstanding issue, how do I get rid of the the unknown USB in device manager?

I have the same setup and I just got 2 sticks of kingston pc1066 today, (128mb each)

I took out the two crimm and put in the new rdrim , booted up and all hell broke loose
i got 3 long beeps
then a pause then 3 long beeps, pause
over and over
i took out the 2 new and put the crim back in and same stuff
ive tried every combo with the ram now

sep,
By d/l the latest usb drivers & latest Bios F4 or F6, from Gigabyte driver site, you'll get rid of the ! usb in device manager. You need to install all the usb drivers. Later, you can check bios menu for options to select only 2 usbs, e.g., if you like.

PhaZe,
So, you tried putting your 128MB 1066 Kingstons in slots 1&2, crimms in slots 3&4, selecting 1066 in bios menu, & you can't boot?

Do the above, clear cmos, & then you still cannot boot?

right, 1066 has been set in the bios since day one, and it still won't boot like this. And this was how I HAD it lol.
I cant even get into the bios, it just beeps 3 times
beep beep beep pause over and over. the wierd part is that its like the power is stalling, like the cd rom and dvd lights turn off and on and when I ejected the CD rom it went out an inch and came back in really fast. I was like wTf hehe

Thanks Belly. I'll give it a try this weekend.

Phaze, that's exactly what my board was doing. I then reset the CMOS and it was able to boot. HOWEVER I then wasn't able to get any operating system installed and this forced me to RMA the board. So, try the CMOS thing and make sure your run some diags/test to make sure the board is still stable. If not return it ASAP!
