8gb ram G5 Mac?

lol i was just browsing the apple website last night at 3am and i went to customize one of their g5 mac's, it had an available upgrade for the ram all the way up to 8 gigs! wtf is that about?
 
Put down the crack, and step slowly away from the computer....

Seriously though, the Mac is a 64bit system these days, just like anything else. It supports up to 8GB of RAM in its current configuration, and some people will find ways to use it all.

If they didn't work with more than 2GB of RAM, then why did Virginia Tech put 4GB in each of their 1100 machines and have no issues doing distributed computing tasks that are extraordinarily intense on a machine's hardware?

Here are some G5 v. PC Cinebench benchmark numbers. It includes a prototype of the G5 2.5GHZ MP system.
