I ordered 4 x 2gb ram. (G.Skill)I plan on using vista 64 and do a lot of web design, graphic design etc.. I use software such as Maya, 3DS Max, all Adobe, etc... Is 8gb of ram overkill? or will it be beneficial?

My set up is:

DFI Motherboard
Q6600
8600GT (will be upgrading soon to 8800GT or better)
8gb of G.Skill DDR2 800
Samsung 500gb SATA HD
Segate 400gb SATA HD
Segate 250gb SATA HD

I would like to OC the Q6600 but will that ram handle it?

Thanks

Wow. That is very likely overkill. How many apps do you run at a time? The Q6600 shouldn't have a problem OCing with them either.

Why are you asking questions if you already ordered it? You'll find out for yourself if it was worth it soon enough.

I just added that same 2x2 GB G.Skill to my existing 2x2 GB Mushkin :p

I'm not seeing any massive differences, but Vista's Superfetch has put it to good use, caching 5200 MB of it :)

I use my workstations for similar apps, but I run xp64. One of them has 6gb and the other I just upgraded from 4 to 8. There was a substantial difference immediately after the upgrade where it counts; modeling time. Disk swapping is far less frequent and, it appears, to be more fluid when it does start swapping.

The new gen 3dsMAX, AutoCAD, etc. will utilize all the RAM you can give them....

I am running 4 inexpensive pc6400 ddr2 sticks at 375x2.5 (950) wihout any stability issues. Your Gskill should do fine.

BTW, just because you are overclocking your processor does not mean that you have to OC your RAM too. In fact you will want to lower the RAM multiplier before you even start overclocking to ensure that it is not your limiting factor, once you find a good place to run your CPU you can speed the RAM back up again.

I'm thinking of going to 8GB just because I can and I feel that maxing out what I can theoretically have in my system while memory is cheap (can get 8GB for under $250) is a good idea.

There is nothing wrong with having more memory, whether it's all used or not it doesn't really matter. The fact that you know memory will never be an issue for you is worth it in the long run. You never know, you may find that you use more memory than you had originally thought.

I guess 8 GB will soon become the standard! 4 GB is already the standard now!

The OS alone will love it. Going from 4GB to 8GB on my Vista 64 installation was like going from 1GB to 2GB on a 32-bit install. Plus, at today's prices, it's almost silly not to max it out.

go for it. superfetch will help manage the memory for you. it typically keeps all of mine cached when i'm running virtual machines

I don't think I'd say 4GB is the new standard just yet. I have no doubts that it will be but I'd say 2GB is still far more common. Reason being is I believe most people still worry about switching to a 64-bit OS.

I think of it this way; 4GB is more of the "high-end" for Vista machines how 2GB was the "high-end" for XP machines a couple years ago. I would be using 4GB of RAM right now if I weren't too worried to make the switch to 64-bit. I'm a gamer so I'm sure the extra 2GB would be of good use, however, I've heard that the "Windows on Windows" mode is not very good for gaming performance. However, I am unsure of this.

5.2 GB cached!? That's a crazy number.

Anyway, if you can afford it and Vista is Superfetching it all, then of course it won't be overkill. A dragster will look unresponsive next to your rig! :D
