Question 8gb at 9-9-9-24 vs. 16gb at 11-11-11-28 - which is better?

Hi All,

I recently upgraded my (aging) system from 8GB at 9-9-9-24 to 16gb at 11-11-11-28. I was starting to run out of memory. It was only a $50 upgrade, but my question is which one is better? I don't really want to mess with the timings on the new ram if it's going to cause instability. I read that generally more slower ram is better than less faster ram (up to a certain point).

Specs:

i7 4770k
1660 super
1tb ssd

Old ram is G.Skill Ripjaws, new ram is Patriot.

Would it be worth trying to mess with the timings or just leave as is?

FWIW I plan on building a new system near the end of the year and recycling this for my son who's yet to have his first system.

If the speed is the same (you didn't say), and the only difference is the timings up, you will never notice any real world difference between the two.

The second you run out of memory and use your swap/page file, then any higher capacity ram (even half speed) would be better.
Also if your old dimms are single rank and your larger/slower dimms are dual rank this can sometimes help performance a little due to interleaving.
