So you want to know what version you are getting? Here is some helpful tips.
SP = Stream Processors

8800GTSv1 is based on the G80 GPU, it has 320MB or 640MB of ram with 6/8 SP clusters enabled for 96 SP.

8800GTSv2 is also a G80, so far only overclocked 640MB versions were released, it came out on the same day as the 8800GT. And it has 7/8 stream processor clusters enabled for a total of 112 SP.
A way to identify it is that some GTS 640MB boxes are marked as 96+ SP (compared to v1 GTS that just said 96 SP).

8800GTSv3 will come out on the 12th of december and it is based on the G92.
It has all 8 clusters of SP enabled for 128SP. The v3 GTS can be most easily recognized by the ram. It will have either 512MB of ram or 1024MB of ram. compared to the v1 and v2 which have 320MB or 640MB.

8800GT is a G92 with 7/8 SP clusters enabled for 112 SP. It has 256MB or 512MB of ram.
The 8800GT outperforms the GTSv1 and v2, but would be outperformed by the v3

8800GTX is a G80 GPU with all 8 SP clusters enabled, for a total of 128 SP. It has
768MB of ram.

8800Ultra is a GTX with higher default clock speeds.

Have you actually seen or know about any specific models with 112sp and 320MB, or is this just a guess? If you know any specific models for either 320MB or 640MB models, it would probably be useful to post.

I know that the EVGA 8800GTS SSC 640-P2-N829-A1 is a v2 GTS.

I haven't actually. It is made quite difficult to determine which is which as they are apparently trying to hide it. The only indication that the eVGA SSC is the v2 is that it lists 96+ SP instead of 96... And the fact that anyone who owns one can use software to examine it and see what they have.

This is another thing I was looking for... anyone knows any other way to determine if a card is v2?

Yeah that is true I think 8800 GTS v2 is as of right now a 640MB part only, as the upcoming 8800 GT 256 will obsolete the 8800 GTS 320 parts entirely.

the 8800GT 512MB already obsoleted them... it is cheaper then them and better in every possible way... the v2 is also obsoleted by the GT despite comming out together, the GT wins in almost every possible situation. Only in a few rare ones does the GTSv2 win by a little... and even then it doesn't justify costing twice as much. (not considering price gouging whores like newegg, in which case it costs only 50% more)

The 8800 GT 512 I see as a 8800 GTS 640 replacement, so we still need the 8800 GT 256 to replace the 8800 GTS 320, it's just that the pricing tiers are scaled back some.

Yes it is marketed as such... but It is cheaper then the GTS 320 already... even with the price gouging... the 230 is just completely obsoleted.

i think im not alone when i say that the whole GF8 series is like an experiment to see how much sh!t the consumers are willing to take.

im skipping this generation completely. im happy playing HG:london at 16x12, full details (but no AA cause its useless ) with my 1950Pro.

so wake me up when the next generation is at a reasonable price.

The 7-series was really no different... 7800GTX/GTX512MB/GT/GS AGP, 7900GTX/GT/GS/GX2/GTO, 7950GT/GX2... and that's just the high end.

Comparatively, the 8-series has 8800Ultra/GTX/GTS320MB/GTS640MB/GTS640MB(112sp)/GTS512MB/GT256MB/GT512MB... The 8-series has a few less cards, but a more confusing naming scheme. The G92 based cards should have been 8900s IMHO.

Personally I have been holding off on the card that I get for my game box for the 9x series from Nvidia. I picked up a 8800GT to tide me over, but I plan on using it in my HTPC anyway (single slot, low power...and it works in there, as it is there right now). The one thing that sucks is that the latest Steam hardware survey has that system in it, so 2GB RAM and 1.3TB of disk space compared to the 4GB RAM 2.2TB disk space in my game/server rig.

Jebus, they are going to release a 8800GTS GTFO version the week after. Or maybe i'll wait for the Geforce 9800Pro in February. Its too bad you can't stick on of these in a Wii, the Ps2 caliber graphics just make me sad.
