8800s - what's on the horizon?

I was going to register my 7900GTO for eVGA's step-up program. I have 32 days left to do so. Does anybody know of any better 8800 series cards coming out in that time that I can put myself on the list for?

Until R600 is released you won't likely be seeing anything higher performance from Nvidia.

8800GTS and 8800GTX are the highest cards you'll see till spring of next year, but you might see the middle and lower range 8 series cards before then. who knows...

give me some vista compatible drivers for my 6600GT nvidia...please!!!

Actually right after I posted I thought about this myself ... I'm running v97.28 right now & am having some problems.

We could maybe see a 8800GT (a card in performance between the 8800GTS and 8800GTX), and/or something cheaper than the 8800GTS at the price of maybe $399 or under.

But either than this, we are going to see better drivers.

I see a 8800GT being below the performance of a 8800GTS for some reason.
But, no OP, nothing is on the horizon except (hopefully) better drivers for all ya 8800 people

Im not sure about that because theres a big gap between the GTX and the GTS enough for another card to fit in between the space. Its not as powerful as the GTX but slightly faster than the GTS, and therefore faster than the last gen cards.

Careful guys, if you say the G80 needs better drivers you're sure to be spreading anti-G80 hate. There are a few people on these forums who don't like to hear such words...

32 days? No. It really is best to look at the games that you are playing / plan on playing and see if you need a better card than the G80. What game / games are you wanting to use or be ready for?

I play mostly racing sims at high resolution. 1920x1200. I used to get pretty fast FPS at 1280x1024, but have since moved up to a 24" LCD. Sometimes the game chokes a little.

Can you step-up with a 7900GTO? I'm not certain that you can. I have one too, and was thinking of it, but read somewhere that it is not eligible.

My guess would be that Nvidia will release a GT version that is the same performance as a 7900GTX, and a budget card that would perform like the 7600GT. And maybe a few months down the road, they will also release a 1gig and increased clocks version of the 8800GTX? Probably some scrub cards too. That's what they usually do.

I've been thinking about upgrading too, and it looks like the 8800GTX is 2x as powerful as a 7900GTO, and the GTS is about 1.5x better, or so, depending on the game and the resolution. I'm hoping GTX prices will drop before Christmas, at least into the $5xx range.

Actually it is. I just applied for the step-up with my GTO. I'm number 88 in line.

Especially since I think I got one of those bum GTO cards. Anything over stock speeds and I get hard crashes in games. I'm not used to an nVidia card that I can't overclock AT ALL.

Having a new card that's 1.5 times faster right off the bat will be great.

That's what can happen when you buy the lowest of the high-end. After my first X1900XTX bit the dust I picked up an X1900XT since it was cheaper and some were getting the same if not better performance out of them. Mine can't touch the overclocks I got with my XTX. I can barely get the XT's VMEM to clock at XTX speeds without complications. Just the luck of the draw sometimes. I know some have gotten great overclocks with the GTO's. /rant.
