My 8800GTX finally died after about 3 or 4 years. Ive not had the computer upgrade bug anymore unless something need to be replaced so ive been out of touch with what is going on in the computer hardware world. Can you guys recommend me something. Something quiet is also good.

Uses:
Surfing the web
Playing LoTRO (hopefully max settings)
Streaming movies
Watching movies
Someday going to set up as HTPC

Price:
$150 or less.

Thanks

8800GTX -> 9800GTX -> GTS250 --(Little slower than)>> GTS450

Basically A GTS450 or an HD5770 would give you slightly better performance than you were getting out of your 8800GTX for less than $150 bucks. The 5770 is slightly faster than the 450, but if NV has something you really like then sticking with the 450 is just as good a choice.

That GTS 250 for $55 after rebate is a great deal, but the ad says for in-store pickup only.

It appears that options have narrowed to the GTX 450 and 460, depending on how much money you want to spend and how much you want to increase performance, if any. You might want to read these two reviews on them:

NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 460: The $200 King

(as noted above you can now get them for a much lower price)

NVIDIA’s GeForce GTS 450: Pushing Fermi In To The Mainstream
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3909/nvidias-geforce-gts-450-pushing-fermi-in-to-the-mainstream

Those articles should help you compare them.

You near a Microcenter? They have a pretty good deal on an EVGA GTX 460 768GB.

http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0342001

$160-$30 rebate

If you wanted to go cheaper and have roughly the same performance of your now dead 8800GTX, you could get this one for $55 after rebate:

I have a Microcenter about 10 blocks away from work so yes that is an option. I dont mind instant rebates, but i hate MIR and try to avoid them in my decision making process since they take forever and never seem guarrenteed anyways of ever getting it. The 8800GTX always worked fine for the type of games i played so something of equal performance today would probably be fine. Id really love to stay under $100.

How would a card like this (below) stack up against my old 8800GTX?

SAPPHIRE 100289L Radeon HD 5670 (Redwood) 1GB 128-bit DDR5

I understand your reluctance to rely on rebates to make a good deal, but they are almost always a factor when it comes to graphics cards.

That HD 5670 would be 1 tier lower than your old 8800 GTX according to the Hierarchy Chart at Tom's. The same website recommends the HD4850 or the previously mentioned GTS250 as being the best cards for ~$95, but it seems like the HD4850 is getting hard to find though and of course, prices are dropping on the next tiers up.

Even before the rebate, the GTS 250 that I linked above is probably a better all around card for $85 than the HD5670.

What about a proper burial for your 8800GTX ? Burry her in your backyard 3 feet deep and say a quick prayer. God bless her, mine been going strong since nov 2007 :)

Before chucking the 8800 GTX, you might want to try this:

The baking trick works well on 8800 GTX & 8800 GTS cards, although it is only a temporary fix in most cases.

Bake it! If you have no warranty left you have only things to gain!

But a new card would be so much lighter on power and cooler.

Decisions...
