opinion:

for someone who bought that 8800gtx when it came out long while ago, and was hesitant about the purchase, knowing that the expensive gpus that you fork over 500 bucks for generally lose value rapidly, I'd say you guys lucked out.

that thing has held the performance crown through about 15 offerings from ATI and about 8 from Nvidia.

I dont think you could have purchased the "performance king" and had it keep its ranking for this long since the debut of the 9700 pro.

lucky bastards

not including ultra model: 1rst place from nov 1 2006 to dec 12 2007

i think the 9700 pro kept its 1rst place position for 14 months

i dont really think i'd feel "lucky" to have paid $500-600 a year ago for that.

i always figure... rather than buy 1 $600 card and have it last 2 years, i can buy... uh 2 $200 cards and upgrade every year, and hell even sell the 1st card when i get the 2nd one.

i mean a year ago you could have say bought a 7900gt for $200 instead of a 8800gtx. and then you could buy a 8800gts 512mb today for $350 today and you'd still be no worse off. and you'd have a 7900gt left over you could probably sell for $100 .

oh well, i guess thats just one way to think about it.

or you could have bout an ati x1900xt and have it be in the top 80% for the last 3 years then get an 8800gt which is just as fast or faster than a 8800gtx with less heat and power consumption and single slot cooling =]

wouldn't call those people lucky by any means because their "top of the line dx10 card" couldn't play any dx10 games for a year or so and when it could, the performance was pretty poor

It's been an extremely disappointing year in video cards.

Over one whole year & still nothing better than an 8800 GTX. (Ultra doesn't count.)

I wouldn't say those of us who spent $600-700 were lucky per say, since it's been an overpriced card from day one, but we did get to enjoy performance some are just getting a year later.

The only real winners in this are nV & maybe AMD...

That doesn't really make sense and actually shows why those who paid $500-600 for a GTX got the most out of their money. You missed out on 1 year's worth of performance that you're finally experiencing today, except you pretty much paid the same price in the end. And if you're unhappy with the performance you're getting now at a fraction of the price, chances are you'll be looking to upgrade again sooner rather than later.

And no, I haven't had a GTX since December, I had a GTS, but if I had to do it all over again I would've forked out the extra $150 back then for sure.

I think I would feel justified in spending that much a year ago if the card is still top of the line today. I would have the satisfaction of getting my money's worth for much longer than I expected to.

Alas, I haven't upgraded beyond my x800xl.:( Maybe in 2008.

Because the 8800GTX has amazing DX9 performance, which is what most of the games have been the past year. Until just about a month ago, there was nothing that didn't absolutely scream on an 8800GTX...

Remember when games like Oblivion buried the 7-series..? Well, Oblivion plays nicely and looks fantastic on an 8800GTX at 1920x1200 with HDR+4xAA/16xAF AND Qarl's High Res Texture pack.

Nvidia probably didn't know back then that they would extend the life cycle of the 8800GTX. It seems to me that they are on top of the game right now, and letting ATI play catchup. If they don't have the competition, why release another product cycle... This is probably the beginning of the slowing of the video product cycles.

Bingo. I agree with OP. I bought my GTX last December and as I've said in a few posts, was in the middle of Oblivion. It totally changed that experience. I can't list the games I've played since then. But only until messy DX10 games started surfacing did my GTX even break a sweat. Paid $649, sold for over $475. I got my money's worth, a year of no limits gaming..
