8800GTS vs. 9800GT

I won't use the card for gaming at all

The 9800GT is the same exact thing as a 8800GT, just a different name.

I dont run SETI on mine but F@H runs pretty good on it.

ok i just purchased that EVGA 9800GT

i just wanna toy with distributed computing on it


my concern was that 320-bit mem bus on the 8800gts might help, but i figure 256 might be all it needs to "keep it fed" anyways ...

Only thing i'll warn you about on that EVGA card. That dual-slot cooler is loud and you cannot control the fan with a third party application. It's a cheap design compared to the older dual slot cards they used to sell. I installed 2 of them for customer's and they are both way to loud for my tastes.

Other than the noise they perform well though!

you're talking to a guy that has 3 of the most powerful fans on the market going full blast

since it'll be running distributed computing 24/7 i figure it needs the good cooling, i've liked those dust devil coolers since they first came out

For distributed computing you should have went with 9600gso. 96SP and fraction of the 9800gt prices.

I went with an 8400gs PCI at a fraction of that fraction... I think I paid $30 bucks AR.

For distributed computing 9600gso is top dog for it's price range. 85% of the 9800gt computing power for half the price and 33% faster than 9600gt and costing less.

8400gs has 16SP. Good for 2D and watching the occasional movie and not much else. 9600gso were also found for the price of $35 AR when they were clearing stock at newegg. Some deals to be had if you look around.

That is a poor choice for many reasons...
The basis reason is the fact that the PCI bus can pump only 133MB/sec. Good for 1998 but unacceptable for 2008.

The 9600GT is better than the 9600GSO in gaming though.

If you're going to get a 9600GSO, watch out for the new ones that are based on another core and have only 48 shaders compared to the 96 shader ones.

That would depend entirely on the game.

GSO is the better raw performer without AA. 9600gt is usually better with AA.

Overclock the GSO and you have very good card for the price. Beating 9600gt in many games even with AA.
