8800gts (superclocked) - a little underwhelmed...

Hey folks,

So I recently changed up my 7800gt to an eVGA 8800gts 320mb, which overclocks easily to 612/2000 (I've gone as high as 650 / 2050, but that's pushing it a bit).

It's a monster in Bioshock. I went from being able to play at 1024x768 at medium details to being able to play at my native 1920x1200 with full details. I get a bit of slowdown occasionally, but it's not really distracting.

Oblivion is another story. With my old card, I could do 1920x1200 at medium-ish details and it was acceptable. With the gts, I can max details and it's usually very smooth (indoors), but in some intense areas like the more detailed cities, it lags badly, getting down to what feels like 12fps or so.

Supreme commander is t3h pwn. 1920x1200, 4xaa, and full details, where I could do low - medium with no AA before. Seems to be gorgeous (haven't tried a massive 8 player free for all yet ;) )

Hopefully Crysis will be good too. I do plan to do the step-up in a few months, assuming theres a faster alternative with (ideally) HD decode support as well by then!

I can't help but feel that it should be a lot quicker, since some reviews I read of stock GTS cards show them performing much better.

Am I getting owned by 320mb vs 640mb? Is my CPU holding me back? What do you guys think?

Seems the performance in Supreme Commander and Bioschock improved a lot for you.
To test if you are limited by cpu, why dont you just overclock it to 2.5-2.6ghz?

You're limited by your CPU in Oblivion. Also, for resolutions like 1920x1200, you really should've gotten the 640MB version.

So wait....You got great speed gains in 2 games and yet you feel it could be a lot quicker?

The numbers you're giving are a lot quicker (settings wise) !

Bioshock 10x7 medium to 19x12 full isn't a big gain? I'd hate to see what was.

As for Oblivion, you went from medium-ish details to max everything...that's pretty good, and will send pretty much any card crying home, especially if you have max grass distance without grass mods.

Also, realize overclocking these cards don't give the huge gains they used to. I've been reading lots of overclock results and I feel they just aren't worth it (right now at least).

As for 320MB vs the 640MB card -- it seriously depends on the game and how it handles textures, what size they are, etc.

Take a look at Firingsquad's AA benchmarks in QuakeWars demo. The 640 and 320 cards score *extremely* close together.

For super-high resolutions, though, the 640MB card generally scores better. Definitely better in some games, slightly in others...it's all over the place.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I figured.

Overclocking my CPU is out, as it seems like any overclock (even modest) makes my system randomly shut down when used over a long period of time. I never really isolated the issue.

I've just read some reviews where Oblivion at 19x12 works very well.

Where can I find more info regarding "grass mods" as you call them?
