8800GTS Question?

Hey AT guys/girls. I have a question in upgrading my video card that I might need some advice on if anyone would be willing. I've found a good local deal on an MSI 8800GTS 640MB/320Bit with 112 stream processors. I'm having trouble finding any test results on it and was wondering how it compares to the 8800gt and the new g92 8800GTS. Thanks a lot!

I believe aside from the new GTS models, the 8800 GT beats out all former GTSs. How much is the MSI one at your local retailer? You'd be surprised some of the prices you can find online.

Not a bad deal at all, whats your current CPU? A lot of people have bought 8800 models to find their performance bottlenecked by a cpu that's too weak to keep up with it.

I'm currently using my old Opteron 144 @ 2.9ghz. I haven't been able to keep up with/upgrade computer stuff cause of school and work so I'm pretty behind. Wondering though if the 112 stream processors is going to make a difference as opposed to the 96 the come on the standard G80 GTS cards?

I don't think you'll really notice the difference between 112 and 96 stream processors, in any case it seems like a good deal for now, but the 9 Series is coming out soon, that's going to force 8 series cards to drop in price, sure you don't want to wait?

$150.00 is a very good price. I would say - take it. It has 640MB of RAM and the least expensive 8800GT will run you about $230.00 which is 50% more than you are about to pay for the card!

Related to this, I'm looking at an 8800GT or GTS (G92) but I'm concerned that my cpu (Athlon X2 4400+, socket 939) will bottleneck my performance. I'm currently running an X800XL 256MB.

Nah, a dual core will work fine.

My youngest son is running opty 175 w/8800gt and it does pretty good

I'd say jump on it for $150. I just went from a 640mb 96sp GTS to a G92 512mb GTS. While I definitely can see the performance, I was able to step up for about $50 total over what I initially paid for the 640mb. But heck for $150 for the 'SSC' 112sp 640mb, I'd be all over it. Even if you're eying up the 9800's, you shouldn't have a problem unloading the 112sp GTS for $150 - the same you paid - in a few months when the 9 series actually hits.
