8800GTS 512mb matches the 768mb 8800GTX except in really intense games and high resolutions (2560x1600) because of the lower memory bus and amount.

Personally I would just go for an 8800GT 512mb or 8800GTS 512mb and overclock it.

XFX and EVGA are both good brands with lifetime warranties. MSI is good for cheap pre-overclocked cards.

You can get a GTS 512 for $215 AR. You just can't beat the value in that. The GTX would beat it in some games and under certain scenarios (1920x1200+ resolution with 4xAA) and the GX2 would offer some very real gains over the GTS.

But for the money you pay for the GTS, it would be a great value. I would just drop the resolution and play with black bars knowing I have the best price/performance package.

In short, the GX2 asks for way too much money and the benefits are mostly evident in Crysis and high resolutions. Check out the 9800GX2 review thread and you can form your opinion based on that. I like bit-tech.net because they use Vista x64 and they always patch their games to the latest versions.

MSI Geforce 8800GTS $244.99, $214.99 AR, with free copy of The Witcher

Exactly how anal are you about IQ and resolution? How much does money mean to you? I'd gladly save $350+ if it meant having to play a few games at less than maxed out resolution/quality settings.

I run most of my games @1920 X 1200 on my 24 inch LCD
I found that EVGA is cheaper than XFX... so I am wondering which one I go for.
plus, if run a 8800gts, how much power I have to have. at least 700W?

Have you checked out any of the benches? I still recommend the GTS but if you want to be certain, check out this thread for links to almost two dozen reviews. See how your favorite games fare on various hardware and how SLI scales on the GX2.

I don't have any preference between EVGA, XFX and BFG. Frequent upgraders tend to choose EVGA for the step-up, others like XFX's warranty (which transfers to the new owner if you sell it later) which supposedly adds to their resale value. I'd just go for whatever is cheaper/bundles a better game but that's just me.

I have seen tons of people running overclocked quad-core CPUs and 8800GTXs on the 520-watt Corsair 520HX power supply. At this point, I'd say go for a quality 550+ PSU if you are certain you will never run SLI/Crossfire. A quality 550W will handle an overclocked quad plus the latest-and-greatest single-GPU video card.

the 520hx and 620hx both come with 2 6+2 pin connectors and 2 regular 6 pin connectors. I told mtbe to check his 620 last night and he found the 6+2 pin connectors in his box (they're modular power supplies). The older 520's didn't come with 6+2 pin connectors but corsair will mail you adapters for only the cost of shipping. Get a 520hx if you never plan to xfire/sli or a 620hx if you do plan to go multi-card. Both have a 5 year warranty.

What's the expected MSRP on that? $350? Based on the preliminary benches, it doesn't seem like it is worth the extra $100+ over the 8800GTS.

Well I have yet to see reliable benches or MSRP information. It should be faster than a 8800ultra (how much is unclear).
