I just read the 9800gx2 review at overclockers club and noticed that their 512meg 8800gts beat out the 8800gtx in pretty much everything. Is this normal? Why does the 8800gts cost $75-150 less than the 8800gtx then?
Yeah, but what games can a gtx run @ 2560x1600 that a gts cant? They ran up to 1950x1200 and neither card could run anything they tested at acceptable frames (or they could at just barely acceptable... 30-50 avg)... and the GTS was still winning. You can also clearly notice the 8800gt SLI pull ahead as resolutions go up (it gets beat by both GTS and GTX at lower reso's most of the time), but the GTX only seems to reduce the amount it gets beat by and not really overtake the GTS.
It wins in high res because of the sheer amount of memory and memory bandwidth (768mb/368bit for the gtx vs 512mb/256bit for the gts) Of course, it still sucks way more power, makes more heat, and is bigger.
in lower resolutions with not a lot of fsaa, the g92 8800gts 512mb should beat the gtx every time, or most of the time since it wont be bandwidth / memory limited since the g92 gpu is more optimized / superior than the g80 gpu.
