I just got a bonus from work and I am looking to upgrade my graphics. I currently have an 8800GTS G80 (640mb). Should I go SLI or get the the G92 8800 GTS?

IMO you should do neither and just keep what you've got.

What are you trying to run that's giving you trouble? Please don't say Crysis...

That 8800GTS G80 is still a pretty strong card, definitely strong enough to hold on till the next generation gets released in the summer don't you think?

If you can sell your 640 MB GTS for damn near what a 512 MB GTS costs, then i'd do that.

Otherwise i'd wait it out till nV (& likely later AMD) finally release a decent high end solution for the first time in a goddamn year & a half. :frown:

Yeah you guys are right. If the next refresh is this summer. I can definately hold out. Now I have all this money burning a hole in my pocket....

I forgot to mention that my system is water cooled so what ever I did, I would need to get another water block for the card which will cost me another $100. I think I should wait.

I don't know that he needs to upgrade the GTS he has, personally, I don't know if I'd bother.

Getting another would be a big performance boost, I'd rather have two of these MSI 8800GTs than a that:
MSI OC with nice HSF for $209.99AMIR

As far as the "long 18 month" wait goes, it seems to me it's often the case that it takes 18 mos (sometimes more) for true "next gen" to come out. Look at X800>X1800, or X1900>X2900, 7800>8800.

especially since he is already at 650 mem/ 2000 core!! that card will probably beat most 8800gt's, especially at higher resolutions!

The extra bandwidth and memory does help when you're moving lots of textures around, like exploring in an RPG. I've mentioned playing The Witcher with both an oc'd G92 GTS and an 8800 GTX. The latter afforded much smoother gameplay.

The big thing is timing on selling aging equipment. Keep it, only one G80 to sell later. Buy another, two highly depreciated cards to sell later. Sell now and buy a couple GT's, you'll have two cards that should pull $160-170, even down the line as flagship arrives.

It's all a game, just have to decide on what hand to play. It's this way by design...

Depends what you want ... if you want to upgrade now ... then it appears that another GTS 640 would give a very nice performance increase over a single g92 GTS. And hold you till next gen, possibly if you are currently dissatisfied.

What is your LCD's resolution and do you find it necessary to turn down details now??

IF everything is OK and if you *still* have money burning in your pocket, buy some PC games ;)

i went to CrossFire last week .. but then i was able to get a very cheap 2nd 2900Pro for $150 to match up with my 2900XT ...
... i'm very satisfied with the performance increase - especially for DX10 games!
