8800gts dilemma

So I did a search and read a few of the 8800gts thread...some would say go for the 640 and for some...the 320...

Initially I had only a budget for the 8600gts...but after more research...the 8800gts seems like a very good performer...my budget is tight and i dont want to regret for getting the 320 instead of 640...well i couldnt afford the 640 🙁

fyi I'm currently using a Dell 19" LCD ( not going to upgrade unless its broken ), so I'm only gonna game at 1280x1024...will the 320 be ok for 2-3 years ? i dont need to game at Max or super ultra settings ;-)

 
The 8600's are weak for gaming so your should definitely get a 8800 if you can afford it. As far as 320 vs 640 it is totally dependent on the game, and somewhat dependent on the resolution. In general 1280x1024 is going to be ok with 320MB on most games for now, but who knows what will happen in the future.
 
320M would be good enough for most current games up to 1600x1280.
640M is almost a waste of money.

people are arguing how the extra 320M will be important when high res is used, but fail to mention at that res, the core speed bottleneck the performance a lot anway, so byebye AA/AF.
 
Two important factors in games put the future in doubt: games benchmarked now were developed with engines available a year or two ago or more; second, they develop to run sufficiently on midrange cards.

While their engines are somewhat outdated and are used to render more surfaces, lights, filters, etc, they work well on midrange cards such as the 8800GTS. It's hard to tell whether new engines such as UE3 or Crytek's Engine, or the one coming from Lucas Arts will make the rendering process more efficient in order to handle more rendering and game processing such as physics while keeping current midrange cards' frame rates playable.

I doubt the 8800GTS will live longer than another year considering that current games leave its frame rates around 30 - 50 fps for higher resolutions, but for 1280x1024 it seems like it can last 2 or more years.

You'd think console ports, which are designed for a max resolution of 1920x1080, would play well enough on the PC for years to come if the hardware of the console in inferior, but the console system has no other resident programs taking up the CPU usage which I assume is being used more than PC games use the PC CPU.

the 8800GTS is a safe bet, but to get 2+ yrs, I'd go for the 640 since the Radeon 2900XT has at least 512MB.
