8800gts and screen corruption, unstabe system.

Hey guys, let me start out with my computer build..

Core2duo e6600
2 gigs ddr800
8800gts 640.
OCZ 600w 4x12v 18a rails

I initially stepped up from a 7950gt ko from evga to their 8800gts 640 with no problems and ran it quite well for some time. out of no where I developed some screen curruption that seemed to have no effect on my system STABILITY, but had an awful effect on my display. some screen shots follow.

After this started happening, I RMAed with evga and was sent a new card. right after I plopped the new card in I began getting screen corruption (i htink that is what you would call it) and some examples follow...

The problems I began having with the new 8800gts were unlike anything I have experienced before. my system stability went to hell and since I have been struggling to find out what the heck is wrong with my system. As soon as the corruption begins, my system pretty much hangs.

I tried the card in an identical system with the same drivers I have been using for about 5 minutes and ran into no problems, granted I should have tested longer, my friend needed his computer back.

the corruption is random at best and sometimes simply cannot be found. I recently thought it had to do with shutting my computer for a duration of time (5+ hours) as this behavor lead to strange occurances on my system, but have since seemed to weed out these posibilites.

I have reseated my card numerous times, contacted evga, contacted ocz and tested my ram - all without any real cause or reason for my problem. I have reformatted twice only to boot with video drivers loaded and the problem persisting. I have tried various drivers.

im desperate and need your help! any thing is appreciated!!!

After reading your post I would suspect your PSU is bad, you mention that you've contacted OCZ, not sure if that was regarding your PSU or memory.
Since card worked in buddies machine, that would eliminate the video card.
That card is very demanding on power compared to your old video card. Since it did work for awhile, it just seems as if PSU is crapping out.
If you still have your old video card, put that back in and try.
Otherwise try another PSU, if it works, than RMA that OCZ.
 
that totally sounds like a power problem. i'm pretty sure the 8800gts is a card sucking up 30A on a 12v rail. 4x12v 18a rails does NOT equal 72A on a single 12v rail. it probably took a while for the card to stress your power supply to the point of it giving these issues such as screen corruption and an unstable system. i'm positive an 8800gts 640 uses more power than a 7950 ko. and its all on the 12v rail. you would probably notice things like that voltage drops when the card's fans kick on, or during a heavy load. i personally like the pc power and cooling silencer power supplies, they are single 12v rail. you can try to confirm it using a different power, or a lower power draw video card. got any old school pci cards around?
 
i spoke with a rep @ evga and he told me 18a on the 12v rail powering a single 8800gts is fine.

I tried the card in my friends computer (with my hdd and video card swapped over) today and it came up with the same problems. any other ideas?
 
You installed your hard drive in your friends computer? didnt that kinda make things more unstable? Does he have exactly same hardware as you?

Is this the same friend in first post, in which, "I tried the card in an identical system with the same drivers I have been using for about 5 minutes and ran into no problems" or is this another friend you have with another identical system?

they told you 18A for a single 8800GTS is fine? if and only if your certain nothing else shares that rail. 😉

if the card has problems in your friends computer. that typically means its the card, since it followed the card. (problems such as screen corruption and the unstable system) since you moved the hard drive as well, i'll pretend his computer had the same hardware, such as motherboard. its possible you just got a bad card back from your rma. if you go through another bad card, the odds play that its your pc killing the cards.
 
my friends computer is has same mobo and HDD as mine, but he is still using the 7950gt.

according the powersupply, the PCI-E1 connection is by itself and provides 18amps.
 
if your friend's 7950gt works without problems in your pc, then its still the 8800 card that is the problem since your problem is following that 8800 under all scenarios.
http://www.tomshardware.com/20...aving_guide/page7.html is a link you should look at, the 8800 probably uses more power than a 7950 (8800 does use more than a 7800), its possible 12Vx18A=216W+amount of power over the mobo's pci-e gives (i think its 75W, but can't remember) is still less than what your 8800GTS 640MB is drawing.i though at full load, you would have the problems. if your even having the problems at idle, its pointing very far toward the card being bad. if only under load, its probably the card as a rule, but you narrowed it down far enough for me to say its the card and to rma, again..

what i would do is contact evga, basically pin the blame on them, demand for a card that will work properly, and have them pay shipping both ways. (i never had an evga card, dont know how their rma works, but if you already paid to ship there for 1 rma, make them pay both ways by telling them the card still doesnt work. did they send you back your same exact card? or a different one? if same exact card, demand for a different card that will work with them paying shipping both ways.

if you get another card that is bad, then i'll answer it must to be a power issue since you went through 3 bad 8800's. but your only on your 2nd, so its very possible they just sent you back a bad card. good luck, let me know how you make out.
 
Thanks for your responses and I have already started the RMA process.

It really is no big hoot to me, I just want to find out what is wrong with my computer.

The first 8800gts was bad, i know that. one of the dvi outputs produced screen corruption that in no way effected my computer performance.

the seconds GTS i think was bad. Sometimes under load or just at the desktop i would artifact and then the computer hung.

if a new one doesnt fix my problems, im calling OCZ, again.

 
dude, i'm having very similar problems. i have:
asus p5b deluxe wifi
c2d e4300 @ 2.7ghz
ocz gamexstream 600w
evga 8800gts 320mb superclocked

games crap out almost every time 3d starts, or i get artifacting, or even when cutscenes run. dunno what the hell is causing it, but i think it's my vid card. never goin with evga again
