I am debating should I get myself a 8800gts or wait a bit and get a 8800gt 512 mb. I know that the high end 8800gt is suppose to be around 250 dollar. Let say what I if I can purchase a brand new 8800gts 640mb for around $310 right now, which should I get to get the best bang of the bucks?

what resolution do you game at? I would wait a few weeks for 8800gt AND 2950 pro/xt to come out, then compare benchmarks/results for games that you like to play.

Not too high, roughly 1280 x 1024, the main resolution on my 19in monitor atm. I was thinking about waiting for the 8800gt to come out. The chinese brenchmark look fake as it show the new 8800gt completely destroy 8800gts and 2900xt and it is kind of rare to see a 8800gts 640 oc for 310. Another thing i am considering is to sell my 7800gt asap after i got the new card while ti still got some value left in it.

There are probably some driver quirks that lead to abnormal scores... but you can be assured that the 8800gt will be a fair amount faster than the 8800gts.

I seriously don't see "how" 8800gt can beat a 8800gts because based on the info, it got the same amount of shader, less memory and 320bit vs 256bit.

No, it has 112SPs, at 1.5GHz. This puts it well ahead of both the 320mb and 640mb GTSs at stock speeds.

Dunno how legit you consider these scores, but I don't there's any doubt the 8800GT will be a better card to play Crysis or any new games with DX10 paths/functionality. Older games where bandwidth is more important I can see the the 8800GTS beating it out, if you are playing WOW at 2500x1600 or something. And at uber-high res for new games, both cards will be equally unplayable (at that point the extra bandwidth will give you 8fps 8800GTS, 6fps 8800GT, lol) so I doubt the bandwidth difference will ever matter for DX10ish games.

I wonder if nVidia will drop the price on the 8800GTX and Ultras, because they won't even be remotely competitive at the current price points. Especially if ATI's 2950pro is indeed as fast as the 2900XT at $220 (of course like the 8800GT it has the same theoretical GFLOPs as the GTX but with much lower bandwidth) so likely, it will be competitive with the 8800 GT being about 85% as fast the 2900XT at close to $200.

I thought the 112SP model was going to be a GTs+ or similar(replacing the current GTS) and the GT was going to be 80 SP?

I don't know, but from the "supposed" 3DMark and game benchmarks, it's looking like there's no way it has any less than 112SPs.

About 25% faster than either GTS in 3DMark06 @1280x1024

31% faster than the 320MB 8800GTS in Fear, Quake 4, SCCT, Prey at 1920 res.

22% faster than the 640MB 8800GTS.

everybody is speaking right now as if they KNOW what nvidia and amd are going to do, but in reality we are all just repeating the crap we've read that was written by somebody else who had no clue, either. it is pure guesswork at this point. one thing that seems likely is that ati has come out with a better-than-expected card and nvidia is rushing to increase the performance of 8800gt to compensate. I think that this round is going to be much more competitive at the least. The lower heat output is obviously a huge advantage for these new cards, too.

The lower heat factor is a big one for me. I hope to do a new Intel build soon and I'm going back to mid-tower form factor. I'm sick of these video cards with their big honkin' heat sinks. It's the single biggest reason I haven't upgraded. Except for the 8800GTX, nothing has interested me, and I'm not a gamer so mid-range performance is fine for me, the GTX is overkill.

So the 8800GT looks like it could be perfect for me.

Good question...LOL.
:)

looks like he's running two 20 inch LCD's, maybe he wants to display his spread sheets in his monitor's native resolution?

I thought 2950 XT was scheduled to come out in 1Q or 2Q of 2008?

The 2950 Pro was originally scheduled for November 19, but it's been pushed a couple days earlier, it sounds like it's going to be November 15 now, 3 days after the 8800GT launch. Either way I'm waiting for some benches before making a decision between the 2950 Pro and the 8800GT. The one thing going for it is supposedly the 8800GT street price will be $50 less, with some of these supposed 3Dmark06 benches seem to lean towards the ATI card it may be worth the difference, but who knows in real world games how (if) that will translate.

yeah, this is looking to be more of the opposite of r600/g80. nvidia is having to drop their prices to remain price competitive it appears. I guess they're the new DAAMIT!

will the 8800 GT's come in any flavor's that have at least 512 MB? I'm trying to hold out until Jan -Mar 08 for the next high end card but for 200 - 300 bucks I'll bite. I'm just concerned about games using higher textures and would like to have a card with at least 512 mb. Playing on an 216BW Samsung at 1280 X 1024 with high settings and sometimes at the native resolution (1680 X 1050) depending on the game.

yes they are planning an 8800gt with 512. supposedly, it will be up to pcb maker to determine whether to use 256 or 512. If you can wait until jan-mar 08 then you'll have a chance to check out everything in the 200-300 range that is coming out. There should be many many benchmarks out in the next month or so. Exciting times!
