it depends on the game. Going from 7900GS to 8800GTS 512 on a 3800+ rig I was able to increase "the witcher" from medium to max settings (without vsync).

On the other hand, HL2 stayed the same... 1280x800 resolution high setting with ~20fps...
when i upgraded to an E8400 CPU and tried it with my old 7900GS I was able to take it to 1920x1200 resolution. So HL2 is apparently very CPU limited on a x2 3800 machine.

So your benefit will depend on the game. the 7900GTX is faster then the 7900GS though...

Was going to ask a similar question... Have an x2 3800+ at 2.6ghz... Went from ATI1800 XT setup to an nvidia 8800 GT and found some improvement, but can't really drive games with much eye candy turned on with my new 1900 x 1200 monitor... I thought the gfx card upgrade would help me hold out until the q9450 processors start to ship, but it's killing me having to play games dumbed down... Glad to hear the CPU upgrade will help me out...

Just have to figure out what new MB to get to go with my q9450... keep options open for nvidia SLI? Anyone's thoughts?

woukld ocing to 2.6ghz or getting a opteron 2.6ghz help out? ima upgrde totally in a few months anyway but you know
