Seeing a few HD 4850 cards in the ~130 range, is the 4850 enough of an upgrade in speed at this price range? My main problem is there are not to many reviews that compare the old sk00l 8800GTS to the new ATI cards...

What resolution do you run in? 1680x1050 or higher I'd say it's probably worth while. Also, you can fairly confidently compare numbers from a 640MB GTS to a 4850 and basically say it's the same as the 320MB. The only different will be at higher resolutions where the 320's lack of memory would make it fall off faster than the 640MB.

if you're not in a rush to upgrade, then another potential option is to just keep the 8800GTS 320, and then get another NV card (I'm thinking GTX260) and use the 8800GTS 320 as a Physx card. That way, you won't have to throw anything away.

I'm in the same boat, with a 8800gts 320mb. But, judging from a lot of posts on the internet it's not worth it, unless you really care about AA. I decided against it, I need something like a GTX260 or HD4870 to make it worthwhile. And those are still roughly 200 euro's. ( crazy considering I payed 280 euro's for my 8800gts 320mb ) but this time i don't think it's worth it.

And 57fps is somehow unplayable?

Sorry, the 4850 doesn't add anything new visually and is an incremental upgrade.

IMO OP if you're making "upgrades" like this, you have way too much time on your hands and way too much money to burn (that could probably be better spent elsewhere).

Wait it out a bit.

I have a 24" LCD and would like to run at 1920x1200. I play TF2 mostly right now
and scale it back to 1680x1050. I don't really turn on AA because of the 320MB. I'm not in a real rush to upgrade but I would like to play at full resolution. I have thought about SLI but I would have to change my MB. I looked up the specs and I think my PS can handle a 4870, would that be a more noticeable speed improvement?

Thanks,

Wayne

With a GTS 320MB, SLI just doesn't make any sense. You will still be limited to 320MB of video memory. That alone should tell you not to consider it. :D

I just made this upgrade myself because my 8800GTS kept crashing in a particular game (GTR2) and it wasn't getting fixed by driver updates.

I game at 1680x1050 and I noticed quite an improvement in most games.

Since you are gaming (trying to anyway) at 1920x1080 I think you should definitely upgrade, either to a 4850, 4870 or even a 4870 1GB. What's the point of having a 24" LCD if you can't even game at the native resolution of the panel?
The 8800 320MB is fine at lower res (1280x1024) but once you crank up the res the card just chokes and the frames go to crap.
