Hey guys,

My 'tentative' system rig specs are as follows:

Opteron 144 at 2.8ghz
8800GTS 320MB overclocked to GTX speeds
1GB of RAM (for now)

What kind of PSU will I need?

My current PSU is decent and gets 26A on the +12v rail.

Thanks!

What ?

I have a OCZ 450 watt Modstream with 26a on the 12+. And my cpu is overclocked from 2.2 to 2.6 and the rig is PERFECTLY stable. You do NOT need a 700 watt psu. Would be nice, but not needed.

Pretty sure it only needs 24A on the 12V rail, however, 350W total system power might be cutting it close depending on how loaded your rig is.

Cool, thanks. :)

I have a feeling you're right; it would be pushing my PSU to its limit. I might actually have a 365w unit, but even still it's close. :)

700w unit isnt needed but a 350w would make me say no. A good 450w psu would probably do the job but personally I'd say 500w just to be on the safe side and have extra room for future upgrades and any overclocking.

Edited for spelling correction

Heres some power information on the 640mb gts which needs a little more power then the 320mb gts.

Torn from a review site.

Electric consumption in question, and in spite of fears which one could have, NVIDIA finally remained almost measured. Thus, according to our recordings power consumption , GeForce 8800 GTS consumes slightly less than one GeForce 7950 GX2 whereas model GTX is far from . NVIDIA recommends the power of 450 Watts with a line 12 volts of 30A for GeForce 8800 GTX. More modest, GeForce 8800 GTS will be satisfied with a power of 400 Watts with a line 12 volts and 26 amps. Side thermal pwoer, nvidia indicates a maximum TDP of 147 Watts for GeForce 8800 GTS against 177 Watts for GeForce 8800 GTX. Here on the other hand, it is almost a doubling of the TDP, which is never was a good sign, since GeForce 7900 GTX displayed a TDP of 90 Watts?

So if a 640mb gts needs 147 watts ,lets say a 320mb gts needs 140 watts (tops). Now add in
a 90 watt cpu and a 25 watt hard drive. At peak wattage that would be 255 watts. The Enermax has a 312 watt 12 volt+ rail. (26 amps X 12) That leaves you with 67 watts to play with right? I think it will work. I have the same psu and done some reading.
Correct me if i'm wrong.

Your overclocked cpu pulls 140 watts, video card 140 watts,20 watts for hard drive. Thats 300 peak. I don't think i'd try it with your system.

I prefer to go with a PSU that supplies at least 25% more juice then my system draws at full load because that way it never has to strain... personally I would go for a high quality 550 watt unit to satisfy those demands with your system however its not required.

You should be able to get by with a good 450 watt model & still have some breathing room to spare, but I don't think sticking with your current 350 watt model is a good idea, especially if its a couple years old because power outputs decrease over time.

*your rig* will correct you if you are wrong
:Q

and it could be *quite expensive* ;)

i *dont understand* why a cheapass [like me] would spend Hundreds of dollars on a top video card and then run it with a *questionable* PS

bigger IS better

:D

I have an OCZ PowerStream 420W running a 880 GTS (640MB) with absolutely no issues. A quality PSU is a must- don't go for a generic one.

everyone here's been telling me that OCZ is "mediocre" high end ... because of it's excessive ripple - at least the 600/750/850 series ...

i got the OCZ 850w despite the 'warnings' ... and i like it's extra ordinary quietness.... although i haven't really been able to put it to any power draw 'test' ... waiting for my Xfire rig upgrade next year looks like i will need 850w ... as a minimum :p

I got an OCZ 700w PSU. :)

For the record, my 350w Enermax unit wouldn't even hook up to my motherboard (it was not pin-compatible - it was very old).

Then I got a 430w PSU that came with my new Antec case, and it couldn't cut it, so now my OCZ 700w PSU runs like a champ. :D

I have the 8800GTS at 625/1000 and my CPU chugs along at 2700mhz on a $10 cheapo cooler.

What they said...

I have a 350W too, but it's only running a 7600gt and stock A64 3200+, and let me tell you, I have absolutely NO confidence in my power supply for any further upgrades. After reading a bunch of literature and PSU calculators, you could make it with a 350 depending on the load, but seeing as how your CPU is more power intensive and it's an 8800, I wouldn't risk it. Best case scenario, you cheap out and the PSU/VC safeties trip, you need to buy a new PSU. Otherwise, clear your nose to enjoy the sweet, toxic burning smell of fried money.

if you don't mind a little "ripple" when it is pushed to the max

Yes, it's very silent. :)

Actually I'm impressed at how quiet my entire rig is, 8800GTS and all. It's nearly dead silent.

Games run nice too; I have yet to find a game that I can't run at 1920x1200 w/ 4XAA. :Q
