8800GT too expensive? 8800GS is here

G80 was done with both 384 bit and 320 bit. Why can't a G92 be done with 256 and 192??? It is no longer as profitable to produce G80 when they can produce G92. Look for a naked pic of a 8800GS. If you don't see that external NV10 chip, it's not G80.

Pretty clear what NV is trying to accomplish with all the 8800 variants....erase ATI from the benchmarking landscape. Its working pretty well too between all the different SKUs combined with the different twists board partners introduce. Now you might see 4-6 NV boards with OC'd versions treated as a new part compared to 1-2 nameless, faceless ATI cards.

And ya I think NV has figured out for some time they could save the most by trimming memory interface/ROPs and RAM (cheaper board costs), especially with the G92 core being cheaper to make. On G80/G92, each 64-bit memory controller is tied to 4 ROPs so these GS should have 3x64-bit controllers feeding the 6 memory chips in 32/64MB densities and a total of 12 ROPs. The lower bandwidth and fewer ROPs will neuter the G92 performance without NV needing to make any changes to the core, saving them even more.

But usually the numbers must be like in pairs, example, a 256-bit bus usually is by the sum of 4 x 64-bit channel, 384-bit - 64-bit = 320 bits, am I confused?

Like a lot of us are:

G80 had 320-bit (5x64) and 384-bit (6x64) memory interfaces.
G92 has 256-bit (4x64), and now it appears 192-bit (3x64).

If you look closely at the PCB's of the Yeston 8800GS (192-bit 384MB) and the Palit 8800GS (192-bit 784MB) you can see they are different. The palit appears to be using the 8800GT PCB.

Look at the Yeston. You see room for a total of 8 32-bit/64MB memory modules, but only see six. Lets add one chip so it would have a total of 7 32-bit/64MB memory modules. If we did this, the stats of the card would be changes to 448MB at would change the total bit width to 224 bit. Add yet another memory module for a total of 8 32-bit/64 memory modules, and you'd have 512MB at 256-bit total width. Essentially a 8800GT bandwidth.

Then look at the Palit card. It has the same room on the front of the card for 8 chips. But has room on the back for 8 additional chips (unlike the Yeston card).

If the palit card specs are 768MB at 192-bit width, then each of those chips would have to be 16-bit's wide. 192/12 = 16. So it has 12 16-bit/64MB modules. (192-bit/768MB).

Add 2 chips to each side of the Palit card for a total of 16 chips at 16-bits wide and 64MB each, you will get 1GB of memory on a 256-bit wide bus. Essentially an 8800GT with 1GB of memory.

One thing further. Take the yeston card again. It has 6 32 bit 64MB chips (384MB/192-bit). Remove 2 of them. You'd have 4 32 bit 64MB chips. The cards specs would then change to (256MB/128-bit). Call it an 8800nu. hehe.

Does this help clear anything up? I hope I didn't confuse things further.

First Nvidia sells us the steak and now we are getting all the variants of hamburger. Just proves how cheap manufacturers are and how stupid the majority of the public are perceived as. Yes this goes along way to explain the G92 shortages. Lets not forget the X2 variants that will follow when Ati launches its R680.By the way this may be sooner than we all think because of the shortage of 3870 cards may be due to limited chips being re-allocated to R680, and pre-production cards with their warpaint beginning to appear.

I also don't see why you say the majority of the public is perceived as dumb. The public wants a variety, and the public wants something new. Nvidia offers both within a solid, proven series, and this is disappointing? I really don't understand why people are so perturbed by the offering of several types of cards.

I'm against it when they cannot keep up with the demand, they simply can't keep the demand of the G92 based 8800GT, so how they can expect to launch another card using the same scarce GPU??

Well, while I'm waiting for an Intel 45nm quad, I might as well wait and see what shows up in terms of video cards over the next few months. Maybe prices will drop and volume shipments will catch up with demand.

8800GS has 96SP, 48TMUs and 12 ROPs

The GT is 20% faster on average however it looks like the price/performance of the GS is really good.

8800GS 384mb ~165 USD, amd the 8800GS 768mb ~204mb USD, but im still not sure if this card will see the light of the day outside of asia. No press release or anything about this card from BFG, asus and the other big players.

Nvidia pretty much is covering most of the performance levels now.

8800 GS 192Bit 96SP 384MB, 768MB
8800 GT 256Bit 112SP 256MB, 512MB, 1GB
8800 GTS 256Bit 128SP 512MB

8800 GTX 384Bit 128SP 768MB (necessary only if you want Tri SLI)
8800 Ultra 384Bit 128SP 768MB (necessary only if you want Tri SLI and want the best no matter what the cost)

It would be interesting to see how the 768MB at stock clocks does against the stock 256MB 8800 GT, 1/3 the memory in exchange for higher core clock, wider memory interface with overall more memory bandwidth and more SP.
