8800gt to 6850?

Honestly, the main reason I'm considering the upgrade is because I've started to play some games again (for example, mass effect 1), during which my 8800gt gets ridiculously loud. I find it very bothersome. Looking around, the 6850 seems like a decent upgrade. I can get it for around $150 with a sale, it's relatively quiet, and not power hungry (good since I'm running a 400 watt corsair).

On the flip side, I'm thinking that after mass effect the video card should be fine for a while. The next games on my list are just relatively old or not graphics intensive, games like company of heroes and trine. I'm thinking that if I can hold off until spring (hello Total War), prices should drop more and there might be better alternatives; according to Tom's Hardware the 6850 isn't that big a jump over my 8800gt. I considered nvidia (460), but I'm leaning towards amd for lower power consumption and eyefinity in case I add an extra monitor down the line.

What would you guys do?

6850 should give you a 100% improvement over 8800gt, while using about the same amount of power at load and much less at idle. It's a good choice. The GTX460 1GB version would provide about the same improvement, but it uses more power at load. Otherwise, very comparable to the 6850. It requires two power connectors, though, which your Corsair PSU doesn't have. Works fine for me with my 768MB version, but at around the same price, I'd get the 6850 over the 460 1GB.

Since a 4850 is faster than an 8800gt and also 1/2 as fast as a 6850, I'd say it would be an extremely noticeable difference in speed.

But if your 8800gt doesn't struggle with the games you play, there's really no reason to upgrade.

6850 not a big jump over a 8800GT?

What is your resolution ? CPU ?

Resolution is 1680x1050, cpu is stock athlon ii x4 630.

I agree with the don't need to upgrade (at this point), it's just that the noise is really bothering me. I could probably buy a better cooler or sidegrade to something that is quieter, but I figure if I'm shelling out dough I want a performance increase.

My situation is similar. I have an 8800GT with an e8400 CPU. I've bought some games that are on the back burner because I can't play them well enough:

Crysis
Gothic 3
Risen
Batman Arkham
etc.

I'm upgrading the GPU now because of all the new releases. I'm looking at ether the 5850, 5870, or the 560 when it comes out. I'm running at 1900x1280 (or 1200).

I'll be upgrading the CPU afterwards. Whats a good GPU to look for in this respect? I dont think I want to spend the cash for the 6950+ or the 570+.

Are the choices I listed good enough, or should I be looking somewhere else?

Is the problem that the 8800GT is not playing ME1 as fast as you would like or is it just that it's loud? If it's the latter, I would just use some compressed air to clean out the heatsink of the card and maybe re-apply the TIM before getting a whole new card. If you do want better performance, I think the 6850 will suit you well and it is MUCH faster than the 8800GT.

You my freind need a quad core cpu first, and a 6870/ gtx 560 after x-mas.🙂

Mostly the sound. That might be a viable solution, but honestly sounds like more effort than it's worth. Plus, all this talk made me more excited.

Thanks for the input fellows. I pulled the trigger tonight, I'm getting the Sapphire 6850 for $155 after promo code and rebate (thanks hot deals).

On a side note, has anyone else seen this verified by visa crap from newegg? It popped up when I ordered some mushkin ram over black friday, and popped up again for this order. I'm just ignoring it, but I'm wondering if it will keep prompting me for every purchase from Newegg. So far, they're the only online store where this has happened.

AnandTech doesn't have the 6850 on their bench area yet, but the 460 1GB is close enough. The 6850 is a great update, and should suit you well. I went from an 8800GT to a GTX 460 1GB, and love it. I didn't think my 8800GT would ever let me down, but recent games really struggle...

thank you for posting this link hopefully they keep updating it with new cards because looking at it this way makes it very simple to compare your old card to the one you want to buy and see how much it is worth spending however much $$ on another card.

upgrading from my 4850 to a 6850 is a 50%+ increase in performance comparing the 460gtx 1gb so probably even 60% and after overclocking even 65% 😀 hehe

I've been dealing with that for years, no exaggeration, if you set up a password for it then just type it in. It is for fraud-prevention, nothing sinister or anything like that.
