Working on the assumption that the 5770 will be close to the performance of the 4890, what option would you take?

1 - Buy a new PSU (current one too weak) and 5850 for ~$375
2 - Buy a 5770 and no PSU (current one is 485W with 32A to 12v) for ~175

Clearly the 5850 will be quite a bit quicker but I would effectively paying an extra $200 for it over the 5770.

I game at 1680 x 1050

What brand/model is your current PSU and how old is it? In Anand's test their system only used 315 watts under load with a 5850. Just playing WoW, it only used 244 watts.

Why do you think 485W will not be enough? AT's own 5850 review showed only a 315W draw for the total system when the card was under full load.

Regarding the PSU....because it only draws 32A for 12V. Pretty sure the 5850 needs about 40A.

I'm not so concerned about the wattage.

It's a Enermax Noisetaker II PSU. Good quality for its time. It's 3.5 years old.

Then it's a dual rail rated 22A per rail. Power the card with one from each rail. BTW, the card only draws about 150W at max load, which is only about 13A total, or 6.5A per rail.

That's interesting. It looks the same but the amps are different. Mine states 18A per rail, but the total is still 32A.

This is mine

They must have updated it or tweaked it. Damn, wish I had that one. It also only has the one pci-e connector.

Even at 18A per rail, you should be fine if you power the card once from each rail.

Ok thanks for the advice. If that's the case then i'll just get the 5850.
