8800GT temperature problem

So i recently purchased a PNY 8800gt off the forums, but I've noticed it's been running a bit hot. It idles at 80 degrees and furmark brings it to about 110 degrees. It's a bit worrying, and seems dangerous. Any suggestions?

Na it's a hot running card and furmark is not real world it is a worst case scenario so you are fine. 80C idle does seem a bit high but really I would think about starting to save for an upgrade anyway if I were you.
 
Sounds high. I believe my reference 8800gt used to idle around 60 and load in the high 80s. I'd be surprised if any card in history idled at 80C.

Make sure fan is rotating at the proper speed - perhaps MSI Afterburner can control it.

If you feel like mod'ing it, there are plenty of aftermarket fans that will bring those temps down, but first just try adjusting the fan speed on the stock fan.
 
Changing the fan speed doesn't seem to affect temps at all. It was idling at 80 degrees, 40% fan speed, ramped it up to 100% fan speed, and there was no difference. Probably bad HSF/GPU contact?

EDIT: Actually, I was wrong, I let it idle for a few minutes udner 40% fan speed. Temps went up to 105 degrees.

An 8800gt typically idles at 60C, theres something wrong with your card if it idles at 80 or 105C which was probably the reason why it was sold.
 
In any case, can somebody walk me through step by step on taking apart my card and replacing the TIM?
 
I replaced the TIM on my card, and it's still running at 80 degrees on idle and >100 degrees on load. Time for aftermarket heatsink?

Hmmm...I'm concerned that new TIM and 100% fan didn't change temps. Maybe something else is wrong...

As much as I respect the performance of a nice $30 Acclero cooler like the one I once used (http://www.amazon.com/Arctic-Cooling...ds=accelero+s1), I don't think it's worth it for an 8800gt at this point, especially given the effort you've already put into testing different solutions that haven't worked.

The 8800gt is matched by $60-70 cards today that have a lot of other features, including much lower idle power use. I'd be tempted to go in that direction.
 
8800gt is always very hot. you can see if it's possible to get fan installed to ventilate the gcard area.

Maybe the threads have stripped and the heatsink is not making good contact with the gpu.
 
I was the seller of the card. The card hasn't been used for a long time, but there were never any issues with it while it was in use. I would suggest stripping it down and re seating the hsf and make sure it's spinning at the correct rpm, maybe try a different program besides msi afterburner. Also what graphic card drivers are you using? Maybe try a earlier / later version. I know some drivers have issues switching between 2d and 3d settings. Maybe the card is staying at 3d and not dropping, but over all the temps are way to high.

I really hope we can figure this issue out for you though! Keep us updated please.
