i removed my stock 8800gt single slot cooler and replaced the original TIM with AS5. that seemed to install fine, but i'm worried about the memory cooling pads.

Question:
is it okay to take off the stock cooler, leave the memory cooling pads on, then re-install the stock cooler with the stock memory pads?
that is what i did and i dont know if the memory is overheating or not.

my temps don't seem to be any better. its actually 2C higher than before, but lets give the AS5 some hours of burn in. i'll report back in 12 hours or so.

I did exactly the same as you when I bought the 8800 GT. I also kept the memory pads as they were, but they never seemed to make a good contact with the cooler after the removal and reassembly. I didn't care anyway since my gpu temps dropped a couple of degrees. I got the feeling that the memory chips were hotter when they were in contact with the cooler, since all that heat from the gpu was transferred to the cooler memory chips.

There is something strange, since you say you have 2 C more then before. I should have dropped 2 C, instead of increasing. Anyway, changing TIM doesn't give anything special. Only the fan speed increase made a huge difference.

i dont know why i have a 2c increase. my fan speed is already at 100% and my temp is at 68C on a 70F NYC night with the window open.

i'm fine with this temp as long as it doesn't get too hot in the afternoon when its 80F out...

side:
do any of the Accelero's work with the 4850/4870? if i were to get the accelero now, i'd like to keep it for an upgrade to those cards.

I wonder how can you stand that fan at 100%!? You don't have problems with the neighbours because of it? :p Anyway, 68 C is more then great for the stock cooler, if the fan noise doesn't bother you. You should have good temperatures even with 80F outside.

And yes, the S1 works for ATI 4850/4870 series. ;)

i CAN'T stand the 100C, but i also can't stand high temps. being a geek, temps come first over sleep. (i'm jk, i'll turn it down to get some sleep)

how long did it take you to install the S1? and how much did u pay for it total? and where did u buy from?

I payed a lot for the S1, since I'm from Europe and every computer component here is so very expensive.... I guess it was around 44 $ ( S1 + 1X120 mm fan) :(

It didn't take long to install it, it's pretty straight forward. It takes more to uninstall the stock cooler and clean the gpu and mem chips, then to put the S1 on.

oh.. well it took me about 2 minutes to get the entire thing off... so install should take 1 minute? lol

what were ur difference in temps from stock -> accelero? @idle and @ load?

what 120mm fan did u use?

Ok, so I had 55/86 C idle/full load temps without any fan speed increase on my stock cooler. After making some Riva Tuner profiles with different speeds, I used to hit, something around 77 C full load, if I remember correctly ( this was in january :) ) with the fan screaming like hell.

The S1 had 39/49 C with one Titan fan spinning at 1200 rpm, without any volt mods. After I increased the gpu voltage at 1,29 V( after this the over current protection stops the card ), from stock 1,05 V , I have 40/67 C. You can put two 120 mm fans on the S1. I'm pretty sorry that I didn't do it since day one.
Anyway, be careful, since this cooler with the extra fan on it, eats up 3 slots bellow the card.

EDIT:All the above measurements, have been taken at an ambient temperature of around 24-27 C. Stress test used is Furmark, since ATI tool always gives lower temperature values.
