8800GT Sparkles with New Cooling Solutions ...

These look interesting but I'm not sure that I've ever heard of "Sparkle" before.

they been around, just not in the USA

They have been around for a long time.
Their PSU units used to be the best back in the days (circa 99 or so)

My impression after reading AT's review was that the single slot cooling solution on the 8800GT was pretty much silent even under moderate load thanks to the 65nm GPU die shrink... not that I'm opposed to a passive option (Gigabyte, Asus are you listening?) for the US market.

Read two other reviews that have the sound level from the 8800GT on par with the existing 8800GTS cards, and better than the 2900XT. The other review I read had the 2900XT sound level all the way up to 60.3 under load at 1600 x 1200 with AA/AF. This was another reason I sold my 2900XT on Ebay for the 8800GT. Came out even by the way - $5.00.

For a HTPC you want the least amount of noise possible.

It's too bad the cooler doesn't exhaust heat out the back of the case. The NV Silencers were great at cooling and getting the hot air out before it could heat up ambient temps. Maybe we'll see one soon enough.

Bryan:
Let me guess it was Tweaktown's review? I have read loads of reviews and all of them say that 8800 GT is more silent than 8800 GTS cooler.. exept that Tweaktown review. Their dB numbers are of the scale anyway.. I mean they meassured it from 2cm distance when you are supposed to test from one meter distance. That's big enough reason to forget that "sound test".

I read a review the other day that showed the 8800gt louder at load than even a 2900xt. Stupid single-slot cooler...

I read two that said the opposite, oh well. Guess I'll find out in a few hours. 🙂

Edit:

This Tweaktown review does indeed have the 2900XT being a hair quieter....

But not by much though. I can live with it either way I guess. Doubt I'll notice the difference anyway with the high CFM case fans I'm using. The noise coming out of my case makes it sound like it's ready for the next Mission to Mars.

Even being on par with the X2900 is way too loud. Louder is just completely unacceptable. I would only be interested in one that's on par with the 7900GTX, which had one of the best (quietest) reference coolers.

Comparing this to my old 2900XT, I found the noise level of the 8800GT much easier on the ears. So i'll have to agree with the other two reviews I read about the sound levels. Even after jacking up the fan-level to 65% I found the noise levels generated acceptable. If you try raising the fan speeds on the 2900XT it sounds like a hair dryer or worse. Perhaps it's the "type" of sound the fan makes which makes the 8800GT eaisier on the ears, at least for me. Quite satisfied. Noise is in the ear of the beholder I guess.
