I just read the thread ( HD 4870 @2560x1600 ) which helped me a little bit, but obviously the resolution is much different. I currently have a evga 8800GT superclocked running at 700/1744/1000 @ (49 idle/ 60 load) and was wondering what would boost my performance the most another 8800GT or a 4870. Both are going to cost me the same because i dont have an sli motherboard, but after the $300 which would help me the most =P. Thanks for any help given!

Specs:
Vista Ultimate 64bit
Q6600 @ 3.2ghz
IP35-E
4 gigs G.skill (800mhz)
Geforce 8800GT (700/1744/1000)

I don't think you will see much of an improvement with either setup at that resolution.

Ya I'd certainly get a larger monitor or run a higher resolution before considering a faster card, as doing so will improve your gaming experience more than either upgrade. Are you actually having problems running games at 1280? Maybe Crysis I guess, but performance doesn't increase much even at lower resolutions.

At that res a single 9600gt or 8800gt would do you just fine

I game at 1680x1050 on my 22 inch lcd. And the games I have played, COD4, BF2, run perfect at that res, with pretty much max settings and some aa and af so the GT is more than good enough at that res :)

I play as of right now CoD4, Hellgate london, little bit of crysis, bioshock, and a few others. I would like to upgrade so i can max all these games out including AA and AF at 1680 x 1050. What would be the best way to go another GT or 4870?

4870 because its more feature advance and ATI will be maturing the driver which will get even more performance increase.

Keep your 8800GT. But if I were to SLI for gaming at or above 1600x1200, I would wait to see what the GTX+ will be pricing at, and maybe SLI 2 GTX+. I have a feeling 2 GTX+ will beat out one 4870. And since SLI'ing Nv cards scale much better than Crossfiring ATI cards, 2 GTX+ could beat 2 4850. And you get Physx support, which could be big in new game titles for 2009.
