8800GT new stock cooler

Interesting. Does that apply to all the cards or only the reference ones (which typically would only be found in OEM systems)? If it's the former, they're doing the same thing as with the GTS in some sense, releasing a slightly different card under the same name.

I guess Nvidia is in effect acknowledging that the old cooler was bad, either because of the temperatures or the noise. I wonder if the people who already got it will be stuck with it.
 
This sucks. I have the old one that I can get 785 on the core, and 1879 on the shaders and 949 on the memory. I wonder if I could talk BFG into just sending me the new cooler instead of exchanging the whole card.
 
Well I'm glad I waited then. I really hope some of the companies start putting two slot cooling on these cards. I have the space.
 
They're already available there, under new model numbers. Check the XFX cards.

[edit] No wait, they're the new 256MB models. That explains why they're so cheap. I guess the 512MB ones should have the new coolers as well though.

My god, 785 on the core and 1879 on the shader, did you volt mod it?? My gigabyte only does 685 with 1690 with the fan at 75%.
 
I wonder if that helps explain some of the supply issues? It's possible that the cards have been held up because the cooler was getting a retro-fit.
 
Great news for anyone buying a new 8800GT, not so great for the rest of us who already have one. I think my GT needs to have an unfortunate accident... 🙂
 
It's only a few degrees cooler. It's a welcome modification, but a lot of people are seriously blowing it out of proportion; we all knew that hte 8800GT fan was going to be pathetic, at best. Just get a good aftermarket cooler; anyone that's going to OC in a healthy margin was going to, anyways, regardless of a [barely] better stock cooler.
 
New fan doesn't provide much better cooling just less noise.

I'm happy with the temps and fan noise on my current 8800GT SSC.
 
2C at load is nothing to write home about. I guess anything is better then nothing, but when your in the 90s who cares if its 2c less?

Also "i can assure the noise level is more lower than the original one." isnt very assuring. And by making the fan bigger it just makes the actual heatsink smaller! probally why is barely cools any better.

Why do you think BFG would exchange for a newer card? Do you think you have a right to one?

Exactly, the fan is larger and spins at a lower RPM, so you should be able to crank up the fan to 80% or higher using Rivatuner for better cooling and the noise levels should be nothing like the older cooler design.

 
People who return non-defective cards or intentionally damage them to get an RMA are part of the reason we are seeing these 'limited lifetime warranties' now. If your going to do it, at least be ashamed of it.

If you were referring to my previous post it was a "joke" indicated by a smiley face. I can't see anyone damaging a working 8800GT, especially for the new cooler which is good, but not that good.

I agree, nothing wrong with "asking". All they need to do is say no, the balls in their court.

I also agree with your second statement. If you're comfortable doing it yourself, it's obviously the way to go.
 
What I really wonder though... If I pre-ordered as part of the dell deal which say will ship on the 10th (or 12th for some people). Does that mean I am gonna get the new cooler or the old one... mmm.
 
Who knows, maybe the new one when Nvidia actually makes some graphics cards.

To me, it's largely irrelevant as I was going to replace the stock crap fan with a good aftermarket cooler. The question is which one, and for how much I'm willing to pay...
 
Nice - bigger fans @ lower RPMs are always better because they're quieter and cool better. :thumbsup:
