UPDATE:
new score is 4284

opteron 170 overclocked to: 2.8ghz
bus:280mhz
so ht is 840 and memory is 187hz

What's going on?! I even have more headroom to oc but temps are getting high. Something is fishy though. Any ideas??

upgraded 7800gt to an 8800gt. 3dmark06 score is 4002

windows 7 64 bit
opteron 170 @ 2.0
2gb ram
asus a8n-sli

newest drivers, all apps shut off, etc.

I know my cpu slow, but shouldn't I be getting a higher score? I got about the same score on my 7800gt. The only difference is that the 8800gt didn't fit in my first pcie slot so I stuck it on the second. My motherboard supports x16 speeds in both slots (but even 8x speed should give be faster than a 7800gt!). Any thoughts?

I would say you are cpu limited. But really you should be trying out games instead of synthetics. Ty messing around with the resolution and if you don't see a performance gain when you lower it(or a performance drop when you augment it) then thats a clear sign that you are cpu limited.

opteron 170 at 2.0 is your problem. thats a VERY slow cpu for modern games and will noticeably limit an 8800gt.

alright then, I'll raise clocks and report back. I'm surprised that the performance is completely limited by the cpu, which also makes me think the 7800gt was also cpu limited...but this cannot be?

well I dont think you realize how slow that cpu is and 3Dmark06 is very cpu dependent.

I remember getting 3750 with my pent 4 @ 3.2 and 7800gs overclocked to the moon.

apparently my pcie x16 slot is running at x1 speed and I have no idea how to fix this. It is a bug some motherboards have with some cards! Any ideas?
