8800GT GPU Fan Speed Issues w/ P5K-E

The fan on my fairly new XFX 8800 GT 512MB is spinning at 100% in both 2d and 3d applications. This isn't a problem while gaming and may even be a blessing compared to people who can't get their fan speed above 29%. It's a major annoyance in 2d applications as at 100% it is very loud. I'm not sure whether the problem is the card, the motherboard (Asus P5K-E), Vista 32 bit, or the video drivers (169.25 forceware).

Rivatuner simply will not change the fan speed and forcing driver versions doesn't help. In fact, when I pull up hardware monitoring with RT and go into setup I don't even have an option for a Temperature setting.

Has anybody else had trouble regulating fan speed with the 8800 GT, 169.25, vista, P5K-E combination?

I think you need to configure riva tuner to support 8800GT, also I'd update the bios on your card.

P5K-E isn't the issue.

Thanks for the responses. My understanding is that the .cfg code is needed for the 8800 GTS 512 models and not for the 8800 GTs. I download the 2.06 version which is supposed to support the 8800 GTs at any rate. I haven't been able to find a bios with any reference to fan speed control issues but I'll keep looking.

The overclock3dguru review of my card included the following blurb:
"Which would quite frankly be bleeding if the cards fan was set to 100% all of the time. Luckily it never breaks a sweat in games (obviously Nvidia realised this would be a sticking point), and so you simply do not hear it. However, open up nTune and put that coolers fan on 100% and you will start crying. The noise is basically unbearable, so beware if this is something you do to keep your card that much cooler when overclocking."

I haven't played with nTune at all so maybe i'll download a copy and see if it works.

Rivatuner should support the 8800 GT without any mods, perhaps you need to RMA the card back to XFX.
I have a P5K-E mobo and an EVGA 8800 GTS and don't have any problems with the fan, so it's not the mobo.

The settings for Rivatuner in Vista are a little different than in XP. I've never used Vista, so I haven't seen the settings I've read about. I used this guide for XP. http://www.vaguesoft.com/users...g/tutorials/rivatuner/

I've read Vista can't do 2d/3d fan speeds and can't apply at startup unless UAC is disabled.

I've heard of your symptom and I believe you are using the wrong tab for Vista. If you don't get an exact answer here from someone else, look at the forum for rivatuner at http://forums.guru3d.com/forumdisplay.php?&forumid=18 or read the FAQ and help files that come with Rivatuner.

My understanding is that RT does not support driver-level fan control in Vista but should support low level fan control. When I adjust my fixed fan speed in low level mode and hit apply nothing happens to the actual fan speed.

Riva Tuner works in Vista with my GT with no problems if you have UAC disabled. Even if you don't, it blocks Riva at the startup, but noticifies you so you can start it.

Which is why I was confused when RT wouldn't work with this specific card (it worked just fine with an XFX 8800 GTS). According to the CS representative at XFX they intentionally did not physically wire up the fan speed controller on this particular model for a reason that doesn't make any sense to me.
