I just bought both of these cards one fore each computer. 2 of the same cards is no fun.

The only thing that the 8800GT has on paper that is better than the 3870 is the texture fill rate.

I have checked a bunch of websites and the consensus is the 8800GT being better. Does the texture fill rate make that much of a difference? Why is the 8800 considered so much better?

I am DL'ing a trial of 3d mark to try on each computer. Assuming the computer specs won't change the score too much I can give a benchmark.

But I am still curious as to why the 8800 is so touted.

Here are the specs from GPU-Z

Radeon HD 3870
ROPS: 16
Shaders: 320 Unified
Pixel fillrate: 12.7
Texture fillrate: 12.7
GDDR4 256bit 512MB
75Gb/s Bandwidth
Core Clock: 800
Memory Clock: 1200

GeForce 8800GT (G92)
ROPS: 16
Shaders: 112 Unified
Pixel fillrate: 9.6
Texture fillrate: 33.6
GDDR3 256bit 512MB
58Gb/s Bandwidth
Core Clock: 600
Memory Clock: 900

Thanks,

All HW numbers aside, I think everyone knows the 8800GT is about 7-10-15% better than a 3870 game depending with overall FPS. The 3870 having about a 7% overall advantage over the 9600GT (again game depending).

They are both great cards. Why bench them ? Just enjoy them and game on :)

These are different architectures so you can't compare them apples to apples. The 88GT is usually about 10% faster when compared months ago, although that situation could have changed with recent drivers.

Because it's usually faster, especially with AA/AF.

I had a 3870 for a while, and frankly it was good, but I wasn't fully impressed. AA from 4x and higher took it's toll with ease on it. I didn't sell it because of that though... It was a good card!
