8800GT Fan Speed vs. Temps

I've gotten lots of good advice over the years here, so I thought I'd give back a little. I just purchased an EVGA 8800GT (650/1900), and have been surprised by the high temps (I had a 7800GT watercooled before, and it never passed 45C). To stress the card for these tests, I used Nvidia's Adrianne, which for some reason stresses the card more than Rthdrbl, or even Crysis... Maybe it's because she's always on the screen demanding max resources. Anyway, here's what I found on my system (a big case, Lian Li V2000, with plenty of ventilation):

Fan
Speed Temps
Auto 92C
40% 89C
50% 83C
60% 78C
70% 76C
80% 73C
90% 72C
100% 71C

I ran the demo, and let it run for 10 mins, and used ATiTool to record the highest temps. As you can see, Auto is just not working for me. The fan is not speeding up. I think that may be why some people are having trouble with artifacts and such. I have an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe, and although I can control the speed manually, it does not appear to be controlling the speed in auto.

The "sweet" spot for me (temps vs. noise) seems to be somewhere between 50% and 60%. At these speeds, the fan sound is not annoying and the cooling performance seems to drop off rapidly after this point (your PC may vary).

By the way, HardwareCanucks (www.hardwarecanucks.com) reviewed the card and determined that the only alternative cooling solutions that will fit will be the ones for the 8600GT. This will most likely change in the future.

Hope this info helps you guys and gals out.

thanks for the stats, and yeah that's ridiculously hot, but then again it IS a wimpy single-slot cooling unit.

Mine tops out at 78C in Crysis. Not OC or tweaking the fan speeds... (so, Auto?)

I'll try this Nvidia's Adrianne though.

8800GT does not appear to have 2D/3D clocks, it just runs at the stock settings all the time, and so does the fan, at 29%.

Ah-Ha! So I'm not crazy, and it's not my board...

Walk - Try Adrianne... It's really a good test.
Astra - That's what mine was locked at. Manually forcing mine to 50%.

The clock freq.s don't change when going from desktop (XP) to games.
Neither do I hear a boost in fan speed like with some cards.

I was reading a thread over at HF and many are fixing the fan speed to no more than 46% due to the loudness at higher speeds. I also read that the Zalman VF900 fits the 8800GT and TR has a new heatsink made for the 8800GT as well. The HR-03 GT.

About the same running that, 77C with fan at stock (29%).

Bumping up the fan to 40-45% does make a quite a difference, and isn't too much louder - I have to mute audio and listen closely to hear the difference actually, something I'd never hear with loud games running...

The tiny 6,000rpm+ chipset fan on this board drowns out almost everything.. heh.

I've only seen it in pics, but it looks like the GT's cooler exausts air mostly out near the case slot? I wonder if pulling that air away from the card will help a bit with temps.

Before I put an HR-03 Plus on my GTX, I used a PCI slot cooler to pull more air through the cooler and ran a fan over the top. This dropped temps five degrees or so. Just a thought...

My 8800GT will be here in the middle of the week and I am worried about the temp. I keep reading how it is sooo hot. Anyways, HOW DO I MANUAL CHANGE FAN SPEED ON 8800GT TO 50%? What program do you guys use?

You can use Rivatuner 2.06 which was just released and is fully compatible .....

http://www.softpedia.com/get/T...-Tweak/RivaTuner.shtml

They have a support forum on Guru3D as well if you run into any issues. If you're using Vista, thanks to the UAC, you'll need to unblock the program however everytime you start the computer. There are a few workarounds, but I didn't care for any of them.

What does ATI Tray Tools measure in normally? Fareheight or Celcius?

I got a Radeon X800 in my comp right now and my 8800GT is ordered and hopfully on its way in about a week.

Currently at Rest it says my X800 is sitting at 130 temp with Ati Tray tools?!

I really hope thats it in Farenheight form. During a heavy game it hits up to 174.

I think those temps are pretty high as it is for such a low grade card and I'm going to be pushing my system even hard with the 8800GT Super Clocked. Think I need new fans in the system?

My cards hit about 64C on full load with fans at 100% Idle is around 45C.

I've found that setting the fans at 80% gives me about the same temperatures as 100% and cuts out the worst of the whine.

I'm idling at 53C at 40% speed, but I set Rivatuner to adjust accordingly if temperatures go up, respectively.

Seems pretty low for 40% speed, but it probably doesn't hurt to be living at a beach campus. :]

I'm in the exact same boat. Got a step up coming. I spoke with a guy at EVGA who's indicated they are working with Nvidia on a driver/bios update. He said the first thing you should do is up the fan through Ntune or Rivatuner. He also indicated the sweet spot noise/performance is right about 45% FWIW...

My 8800GTS is both quiet and temp doesn't go over 60C :)

Seems that two slot cooling costs more, but it has better performance.

How did you do that? I can't figure out how to "unlock" the auto-speed control. Does it really work?

Also in Rivatuner, do you use the "low level system settings" to control the fan, or the other page under "driver settings" ?

I was using the 1st for a while (that's where the auto-stuff is), using 41% fan speed temps are IDLE = 53, LOAD = 72-73.

Then I tried the other page (driver settings) set at 41%, maybe I did something wrong because I ran some games and the temps went up to 81! Which is about where it was with the fan on auto/29%. So I went back to using the other page @44% right now and it topped out at 71 again like normal..

?

Same issue here, the card is brilliant (BFG). I don't mind the temps but the fan never auto adjusts, and cooler is better.
There must be a fix for this soon, but is it driver or bios related?

This is a very interesting thread. I have spent the last couple days testing and adjusting the Fan Speed % vs temp of my BFG 8800GT OC. So here my my contribution to this thread:

1. The EVGA guy gave you the straight scoop. I found 45% Fan Speed to be the sweet spot. It will give you the quietest and lowest core temp at idle. YMMV depending on your room temp.

2. walk2k and requiem1 and others. To adjust the fan speed, I use Riva tuner, customize, low level and create and save several fan speed profiles. Then I use launcher to create launch for different fan speed.

I then use the hardware monitor setup to set up different profiles for different temps. For example:

a. 30% fan speed < 40C
b. 30C<40% <50C
c. 50% fan speed > 50C

The above is an example only.

What we did was to program the fan speed to automatically increase with rising core temp.

I found the whine bo be significant above 65% fan speed.

Hope this help some of you guys!!!

Peace!!!

bookmarked.

my 8800GT was hitting 80C load.

of course i haven't messed with the fan so i assume it's still running at 29%?

As far as I know the 8800gt uses the 7 series screw holes so any cooler for the 7 series should work. But in any case the vf900 works for sure, and the duorb works for sure. Temps go down by 20+C with these coolers.

My 8800gt is sitting at 40idle/55C load at 725/1810/950 speeds using the duorb. Was at 60idle/105C (auto 29% fan speed) at 650/950 using the stock cooler.
