...came home from a trip, and the computer that my kids use (which runs gpugrid and 2 BOINC processes) was showing 107 C on the GPU. The fan slider on the EVGA Precision tool had been shifted down to 20% from the usual 80%. The card's exhaust vent was pumping out major heat. It was still crunching, though, and seems to have suffered no ill effects.

... I hope you cranked the fan up to max - at least for a while, while the card cooled down.
OTOH: I have seen reports of temps in the 98 - 100ºC-range in other forums and even in some reviews of VGA-HSFs.

Great to hear it didn't fry! (If it's still crunching, it survived.... crunching will show any failure much more quickly than looking for the odd artifact in a game or benchmark)

That is scary hot though

My Asus "top" (overclocked) 9600GSO fried itself at 96C for two weeks of 24/7 F@H.

I don't know if all NV cards fry at those temps, or if I was just an unlucky one, but be careful of those temps!

I feel the same. My 2 8800GTScards run hot all the time. I pulled 1 apart and removed the crap that was on it and applied AS5 and it helped a little bit. But average temps for those cards (depending on the WU) is about 85c - 94c. I Have to have the fans at 100% or they will overheat. My cases have pretty good cooling so, I just have to watch them carefully.

If I let my NV cards get over ~75C, I will begin to see EUEs (maybe one a day). They've been up to ~85C with no damage though. I keep the card fans at 100% and fun the case fans full blast. Hard to keep the things cool in my cases with two of them running.

My 9800gtx2 runs hot too. Fans are maxed and I hate the wine but can't seem to get them cooler than 78.

keep folding,

Don't worry, GPUs are pretty durable. My GTX265 was running at 80C before I set the fan to 80% permanently using RivaTuner, now it never gets to 60C :)

Really? A GTX 265? Can I haz one? Do you mean GTX 285?

I've had plenty of GPU's up at 80-100C before... not Folding, of course. Folding, they've always been on water and @ 50C.

I think mrSHEiK124 has named the GTX260/216 a GTX 265. if I remember correctly from a previous thread read.:)

I like it! I have dual GTX 265's then! Woot.

Nice on getting a WU to finish on your 8600GT. I finally got my 8800GTS back up and I'm kinda worried about the old OC. My EK waterblock has warped the card about 10 degrees downwards. Don't know the contact anymore, but so far it's at 780core/1950shader/970mem and staying pretty chill.

Keep Folding mrSHEiK124!
