So is there any preference as to manufacturer for the 8800GT you get?
So far it seems EVGA, ASUS, BFG, and XFX are the ones everyone is buying. I've been wanting the EVGA SSC edition with the 700 core and 2000 memory clocks. However those have been very hard to find in stock. ASUS however has a 8800GT Top with the same clock timings. Its in stock and slightly cheaper.

Now I know there is some difference with PC parts manufacturers. So are either of these the manufacturer to go with or the one to avoid?

I got the XFX 8800GT (Alpha Dog). It has the newer cooler (beware the small fan on reference boards unless you like the sound of vacums). EVGA seems nice but too many people are buying them and I get wary of any service glut. XFX has generous warranty and its extended to second ower if you give it away or sell it etc. I like the black PCB as well. I see the XFX reps around on line too and XFX seems eager to make a good card (and I like how they put EVGA's name is drooling dogs mouth on a cover of a card last year lol - see link below)). Asus is ok but I already get nervous thinking about their support having owned their mobos.

That's ^ gone up $20.00 since I bought one last week - and they have only been in stock a couple times.

The XFX earned a rare 5 star rating in PC Magazine (December 25, 2007). I think I'm gonna byte the bullet and get one myself...Merry Christmas!
