8800GT 256mb vs 8800GT 512mb - worth it for me?

People these days talk about how great 512 mb is on a gfx card...but all the benchmarks i see comparing 256mb and 512mb show the 256mb performance just as well (maybe 1% less on my resolution) unless you are using some crazy resolution (the benchmarks I am referring to are NOT for the 8800GT but just tests I have seen used on recent games with recent graphic cards). Can someone discuss the true noticeable differences between the 2 versions and which version of 8800GT will truly be worth it for me - I plays max settings on 1280x1024. Thanks.

Why not post the question in this thread ?

IMHO For current gaming at that resolution 256mb is enough, but with a new batch of games coming, i'd go with 512, which is exactly what i'm doing.

I think I might even upgrade to the 512mb from my current 320mb one, a lot of the new games coming out, especially crysis, will be using a lot of vram.

One of the reasons I'm going for the 512MB GT instead of an 8800GTS OCed is the memory issue. It doesn't matter how fast the card is, if you don't have enough RAM, at higher settings the performance will plummet. I fully expect the GT in some cases to be slightly slower than the GTS, but better that than no-show performance at higher resolutions.

And some of the DX10 benchmarks already show major differences at 1280res between 640mb and 320mb GTSs...maybe you ought to consider the 512 for the difference.

Completely different topic! 😉

you should definitely buy the 256 mb card...maybe they'll drop the prices on the higher end offerings from both camps if more people ignore them for the cheaper ones!

AH U SCUM! u just want me to buy the 256mb so you can get a cheaper 512MB due to demand issues! EVIL! lol...jk

A better question would be, when are they going to start offering cards that just have slots so you can install your own RAM like a motherboard does?

Or like motherboards with upgradable onboard video ram used to...

I wonder if they ever had them in stock though? Some of the etailers I called said they don't even receive the shipments from the manufacturers until the 29th.

I am guessing they never had them at all, but simply listed their "stock" as the cards they were allotted by nvidia from manufacturers for the preliminary launch week. With a couple etailers on the phone they told me "they had 5." Then afterwards, the clarify, they said, "they were alotted 5." Lol.

It's 6megs per 1024x1024 texture with an uncompressed normal map

dx1 compression on diffuse for 682k
uncompressed on normal/reference maps for 5.33megs

🙁
Good luck finding these cards 🙁
With the Crysis coming out in few weeks, everybody will try to get one...

go with 512MB...8800GTS 320MB was a good price at $250 when i bought it, but paying $100-$150 more for the 640MB was not. in this case, i think you should get the higher memory.

Well, if there aint a big price difference definately go with the 512 as the next gen games coming year end are all pretty texture intensive and it pays to get a higher memory card.

Though I wouldn't expect the 8800GT to hold up with Crysis at max settings, even the GTX struggles with that, and the 256bit bus doesn't either.
